Well, it was 8 years ago, but as I recall the turn signals went out, and/or the cruise control. And there was a "sprong" sound when turning the wheel.

I used to work as a mechanic at a Chrysler dealership and forgot more than what most people know. I remember replaceing one of them, but don't remember WHY.....

There was a recall on many 2001 Chrysler vehicles due to a bad batch of clocksprings.
My bet is at least one of those must have passed your way.

Actually it was from the timeframe of 1995-1997 when I worked there, I do recall having my clockspring recalled on a 2001 Dually I used to have though.

The clockspring problem is rare in the 12 valves, more often occurs in '98 and newer years.

Second most common problem is a bad brake light switch. The switch has three sets of contacts, brake lights can work fine but not the cruise.
Sometimes you can diagnose a bad switch by lifting up on the brake pedal with your foot while engaging the cruise.
I find it's easier to just replace the switch, fast and cheap.
The switch is $11 at Napa.
Not highjacking the post..Got my cruise working...Mine was a switch..Pulled up the brake pedal and my cruise works...Thanks Bill...

96 and 97 models have a little light next to the cruise on/off switch that illuminates green when turned on. my 98 has the light on the dash that says "cruise" and its green, i would guess the rest of the second gens are the same.
