Born again - back to diesel

I had an 2004 quad cab 4x4 auto 5.9. I fell asleep in it and wrecked it. I needed a truck fast and didn't want a 6.7. So I bought a 2010 2500 crew hemi 4x4 I just sold because it got terrible gas mile esp if I towed anything.

I am looking for a 1998-2006 ( I like the 1st gen body style better. and the kids are gone) 5.9 24V, 4x4, clubcab. This will be backup vehicle as I don't use my truck fior work any longer, mainly weekends for hunting, camping, trips to Lowes etc.

Is there anything I should look out for in the 1gen 24V

I would like to get a 6sp if I can find one. I noticed some came with 5spd and some with 6spds ...what gives with this?

Thank you

Ahh, you will be referring to 2nd gen if you are in the 98-02 range, 3rd gen 03-06, that may help you out some.

there is a wealth of 24valve stuff already written on here, search it and you will save us a lot of typing,

53 block
VP44
Lift Pump
Suspension/steering upgrades
Electronic gremlins
etc
etc.

Also, the Club cab ended in the 99-00 era and is referred to as Quad Cab if you want the suicide opening rear doors, which ended in the 03 year with the Crew Cab style with 4 full doors.

The 6-speeds were an attempt to improve the gear range for towing over the 5 speed. And it did, giving the driver an extra gear between 3 and 4 over the 5 speed, improving pull and scaling down the rpm lag between shifts. It is not an additional gear after 5 as some believe, 5 and 6 are still the same ratio between the two transmissions. The 5 speed is the New Venture 4500 referred to as the NV4500, the 6 speed is the NV5600. The 5600 is a finicky beast and doesn't like to be force shifted but a great trans and almost bulletproof, however the wrong lube and it self destructs, which gets expensive. It has a much larger main shaft than the 4500 and takes a larger clutch. The early ones had some lubrication issues.

A truck with the 6-speed is an HO with 10 more HP than a similar 5 speed equipped truck. There were no HO's with automatic transmissions or 5 speeds.

A lot of the issues have been worked out with mods and aftermarket parts solutions, the problem will be finding a 2nd gen that doesn't have a hundred thou on the odometer, still a solid engine but a tired chassis!!
