I took a quick look at my 98 caliper brackets they appear to be part of the knuckle. Does any one know if the newer style knuckle will bolt up on an older truck and if so where to get some?

Watching this one to see further results. Sounding very positive at this point. Next time I do brakes, I'll probably need rotors anyway. May as well upgrade. Interested to see if anyone solves the dust shield issue.

This is great info guys !!!!!!

Just be sure to remember to mention this to whoever buys your truck when you sell it. I can see it's going to be a nightmare for next owner trying to get a brake job done....

I bought dust shields, but could not put them on without dismantling the hubs. I plan on doing the EMS hubs when my bearings go out and I will install them at that time.
The rotors only stick out about a 1/4 inch past the original dust shields.

I have the Rickson 19.5 steel rims and they weigh about 160 lbs. I am able to lock up the wheels with no problem. This is an awesome improvement on the brakes

Just thought I would bring this forward as I notice people asking about bigger brakes.

After 10 thousand miles on them, I can honestly say that they are totally worth it and it is a night and day difference. I also picked up about a 1-2 mpg hwy mileage gain with the 19.5s.

One question I have is about the rear discs.

Are the rear discs larger on the 3rd gens also, or are the front brakes the only larger brakes the 3rd gens have over a 2nd gen truck?

I obviously have 4wdb.

I noticed some members were asking questions about their brakes and thought I would bring this forward for others to read.

By the way, I have to say that this is about the best thing that I have done to truck. This truck will flat out STOP! even with the really heavy wheels, and the brakes don't seem to fade when towing like they use to.

For those of you who don't know 70-80 percent of your stopping power when empty comes from the front brakes and when you are loaded this number shifts a little to something like 60-70 with the rear picking up a little more. So if you improve the rear by say five percent or add rear disc the total improvement will be a very small percentage of the total stopping power, and if you can improve the front the difference will be huge.

I'm bring this up to the top again, I eat brakes every 4months 20,000kms, and thats with high quality pads (bendix commercial, GM wheel cyls, rears adjusted every month) Other couriors with the 03 and up manage to get one yrs out of a set of fronts, mind you they also have rear discs as well, so i'm thinking the larger pads and rotors will definitatly help.

so far I've bought the brake caliper brackets 24$ for one side and 66$ for the other?????? I dont get it. I got a set of stock steel chrome rims from an 03 for 200$ all thats left to pick up is the rotors 75$ each and pads for 60$

I have to wait till I burn off the brakes I have now ,the rotors are a couple months old and the pads are hawk(135$) which I installed a month ago, I hate to take them off when they are still like new but its killing me to wait to do the upgrade. anyone in edm needing rotors and pads?????

Who is EMS? Do you have their number available? I'd be interested in converting my 94 2wd to rear disc (easier to do brake jobs, and they're self cleaning). I did the wheel cylinder upgrade (the the bigger, GM parts) and I got a ton more stopping power, but the drums are such a hassle to adjust, I'd rather just do 4 wheel disc and be done with it.

Update:
I have about 6000kms on them now, and it looks like eating thru pads has finally stopped, took it apart tonight ( installed new anti-rattle clips and bushings) and there is no measurable wear!! with the old pads/rotors I'd have about 3/4 left based on mileage driven, and this is on a set of pads that cost 1/2 as much, and stops twice as good

again stopping power is awesome, the way it should have been from the factory

thanks to the guys who fiqured out this mod, my hat's off to you!!

Nick
