bearings clean and repacking

The person I am buying 02 4x4 has not cleaned and repacked bearings in 30,000 miles. I am going to clean and repack prior to driving 700 miles back home. Do you think any damage was done. Also do rears need done on 2nd gens .Thanks

The fronts on '94+ all use non-serviceable unit-bearings. Check the truck out well when you go to pick it up, if there's no noise or play in the front bearings I'd say you shouldn't have any trouble in a 700 mile ride. For the rears, no, they don't need to be repacked, they are lubed by gear oil from the diff. If I'm installing new bearings, I do grease them before install.

Not quite, the 2wd front bearings are serviceable.
If it's a 4wd no worry except the bearings couldn't have been serviced 30k ago.
This would make me wonder if anything else the owner told you about service is true.

I quess I am not being takin serious. Anyway, I repack my 93 every 15 thousand. I quess that is one of many reasons I dont have to keep posting on how to fix something. Think I read a post yesterday of someone changing bearings on 2nd gen while doing brake job. 225K on my original bearings  Anyway I dont think sealed bearings are a good idea on a HD work truck. IMHO Yes, I am having other things checked such as FP/LP etc.

2wds up to 2k have servicable bearings, so they could have changed the bearings during a brake overhaul. But on a 4x4, they could have just changed the whole bearing unit during brake work.

As infidel says, on the 4x4's the front bearings are not servicable. They are one complete sealed unit and they are not cheap to replace nor easy.Do a search on front wheel bearings and you will come up with what is required to replace them, not a job anyone looks forward to doing.

Well that guy must have never tried to drive a truck with a bearing fallen apart.
