Backup Lights being weird

I have the 98 12 valve auto. When I put it into reverse the reverse light will not come on, but if I move the shift lever up toward park just a bit the lights will come on.

So you think it could be the switch just wearing out or something else

Thanks

That's a known problem with our trucks. I tried twice to hang back-up lights from the rear bumper and both times knocked them off on rough ground. Finally I got out a hole saw and a sawzall and did this:

They're LED's and are pretty bright at night, but don't illuminate very far behind the truck. I put a toggle switch and an indicator light on the dash. I like 'em.
