Alternator trouble
 
OK- I've just about had it with this truck!

Replaced alternator last August and have put less than 4000 km on it since then.
Started truck this morning and smelled something like wire or ? burning.

Guage showed that there was no charging happening. First thought... bad alternator sooooooooo I go to the shop where I had it replaced and they should should be no problem... warrenty!

I wait for parts, installation and presto... still not working........

They tell me its my "PCM" computer?:(
Apparently, this is used to regulate the charging as well as a number of other things in the truck. New one is $2900.00 Cdn.

They refer me to an auto electric guy. He is gonna put in an external regulator for about a $100.00.

Anyone else go through this? Is this a mistake? Am I gonna have more trouble down the road?:(

I've just about had it with Dodge and Diesels. With the price of Diesel, the fact I don't pull a trailer anymore and cost of repairs on these trucks, I'll be buying an import soon!

the regulator is in the PCM

it is rare for the PCM regulator to quit.

You can wire up an auxillary VR no problem.

I am have problems with my alt also. I just found a regulator that I can put inside the alt that will make it self regulating. If you have a Nipon alt then you can try finding an alt repair place and buy you a C8315 self regulator board. I just got one yesterday for $20usd, so I hope to get mine installed tomorrow.

You can always just do a leece neville conversion.Cheaper,easier,and much reliable,not to mention the output difference.The new Leeces are the same price and now put out 160amps. Remember these are heavy duty alternators built for over the road tractors.There output is continous,not like the little alternators on our pickups that make there output for 15 minutes,then fade off and get hot.The Leece is meant to run at full load for years without any trouble.

I have good news . I did get time to install the regulator board and it works good, even at Idle it charges fine at 14.2 ( both of my batterys were a bit low to start with) it tapered off to about 13.8 after a while of charging up my batterys. I did have to add a jumper wire from a keyed 12v to turn it on, I set this up on a relay that also turns on my elect fuel pump. Best $20 I have spent lately. So, now I have just a few other things to finish up then I can start saving up $ for upgrades. Maybe 4" exhaust then maybe some bigger injectors......
