Air control not working

My air control is no longer working...I only have air going to the defrosters no matter what I select. I have searched this and for the 1st gens it is sometimes a vacuum issue...but what is it with my 2001? Is it the actuator? How much of a pain is getting to that? Of course this happens when it is starting to get hot

I don't know much about 1st Gens, but the problem as described is almost garuanteed to be a vacuum leak somewhere on a 2nd Gen.

I had that happen on mine and it turned out to be the vacuum line that runs across the back of the engine, where the hood hits the rubber seal at the back of the hood. The vacuum line came loose from the clamp and fell down on the back side of the exhaust manifold and melted in two. Upon repair, I use cable ties to secure it too the electrical cables coming across the back. I'd check there first.

Same problem when the vacuum line off the speed control chamber broke.

Fine your leak, then get some generic vacuum line and some appropriate fittings.

Edit: You can narrow the leak possibilities by disconnecting one line at a time from the tee that is attached to the line that comes off the vacuum pump, then covering the hole with your finger. If it sucks better, then the line you just replaced with your finger is the one leaking. The engine has to be running for this.

So given that I just adjusted the valve lash and pulled the valve cover off, is there a good chance I knocked the line loose...the timing would be appropriate if it is a vacuum line across the back of the engine.

Possibly... if that happened, it was probably you pulling a brittle line to the point of breaking. The OEM lines get brittle after a while.

The vacuum system is really simple on the diesels, so there isn't too much to troubleshoot.

Awesome! Don't you love it when you initially think a problem will be expensive/troublesome, and $5 of tubing fixed it?
