AAAH no brakes, PS & vaccum pump, driveway or dealer?
Hey guys, I have posted a bunch of times in the past week, ironing out all the issues on my 'new' old truck. My brakes are crazy! sometimes the right works not the left, and sometimes i loose power assist all together. my PS pump is bad, it leaks a lot and needs to get replaced. but Also the vaccum pump. so i have a few questions. Is the power steering pump and vaccum pump a single item or are there two seperate pumps down there. Also I looked on NAPA, the pumps really arent bad $225 for both. So my question is how hard are they to install, I am a good weekend wrench, but this is new terriroty for me. So I was wondering if it might be worth dropping at the local dealership having the PS pump replaced, the vaccum pump replaced, and Might even have them rebuild my front end, new tie rods, new Linkage, drag bar ball joints and allign it for me. Frotn shocks too. I know all these things need to be done, and wasfiguring it might be nice, just to drop it off and have it come back riding like a new ride. I have another car so that's not the issue. Just don't know if the $$ is worth haveing the stearlership do it, if the pumps arent that hard to swap out.....OPINIONS from all are welcome, want to do it either way in the next 3 weeks. So let me have it! thanks in advance.
Two separate pumps there. PS pump is bolted to the back of the vac pump, which in turn bolts to the gear case. Not a technically difficult swap, but it's a little close down in there.
Why do you think the vac pump needs replaced? These rarely fail, although after lots of miles they tend to leak a bit, but the seal is easily replaced.
As for having the dealership do the work, that's your call. If you have lots of cash and don't mind giving it to someone else, go for it. From all you said needed done, that would be a really large bill. It may be worth it to you to avoid the hassle.

Generally vac pumps are good and issues are caused by vac leaks in the supporting hoses and connections to hvac unit under dash.
Make sure get correct ps pump as not same as a gasser.
Job is not that difficult. Use good PS fluid, Syn if can find as only needs 2qts to lightly flush and fill.

now that i think about it, are the vent selectors ran off Vaccum? because my heat will only go defrost...and lack of vaccum was the issue in my 05 Super duty....so if there was a break back there, it would cause the brake issue. and the vent issue...but PS pump is awful. got to order it and swap next week
