Good to have those other thoughts about 4.10 diff. Since most of my use will be highway with slide-in on the back, might be an advantage to have a 3.73 instead, but as you said, it's probably not make or break. Is there a quick way to tell, other than driving and watching the RPM at 60mph? Does the VIN indicated the kind of gearing in the diff?
Also, ex-BIL was advising to go with a 4x4 if possible, since he felt that even wet grass in a campsite could spell trouble for a 2wd. Not sure I'd go THAT far, especially with a 2,000 pound camper on the back I should have enough traction, but I suppose all things being equal, probably better to have 4x4 than 2x4, especially if envisioning trips out in the boonies of the North.

There should be a sticker on the underside of the hood with the gear ratio, a tag on the rearend, and the tag inside the driverside door should have an axle code, which would be exlplained in the owners manual. All of this depends on if those are the original gears.
My opinion, I would rather have a 4WD anyday, over a 2WD. Sooner or later you will need it, and it usually increases the value of the truck.

Thanks Hodge, on both counts! 4WD is where I'll direct my search from now on, for all the obvious reasons. If I got myself an Alaskan popup camper, it was to allow me to go to places a bit off the beaten path. 2WD is fine for on-road travel, large campgrounds, interstates, etc., but the benefits for 4WD for traveling marginal roads cannot be underestimated, the more I think about it. My truck has 4:10's in it, it does fine on the interstate, about 18mpg or so. As far as getting stuck, I haven't had a problem in wet grass and field type stuff, no way would I go "off road". If mine would not have been CHEAP, I would rather have 4x4, and a backseat for that matter. But hey, if you like the truck, and can afford it, get it!
