96 Cummins Worth The Price?

So, my coworker wants to sell me his 96 Cummins 2500 with 200k miles. It is in excellent shape with new tires and rims. He says these trucks are excellent and he can easily get $10,000 for it. I looked it up on KBB and it only blue booked at $5,800. I looked on EBay motors and they were going for $10,000 or so. What am I missing? Is this truck worth it? I trust my friends judgement, but I don't want to get screwed either. Thanks for the advise.........Sean

I clicked the photo, still wont enlarge beyond 1/2 inch- looks nice- those go for $6000-$9500 around my parts. The best truck I have ever driven was a 2001 crew cab F350 with a 12V in it- One day I will build one! Best power, best pulling, and you can keep it in the same lane when on rough roads!

Sean, I turned down 15 for my Greenie a couple months ago with 170K on her.

Stupid I know, but really where are you going to find a truck like that again?

If you decide to pay that price though, it needs to become married to you............

I really like the truck and I'm the kind of guy who'll take care of it. I have a couple gas motor trucks that are sweet, but this is my first diesel. I just have a hard time paying $3,500 over blue book when the only accessories on it are rims and some what new tires, but I also don't want to lowball my coworker.

I think it is overpriced, but compared to other diesels, it is cheaper to maintain and add power. It is a stout truck, and easy to work on. I gave $6,000 for mine with 164,000 miles on it, and I wouldn't think about selling it for that- it is too valuable to me, and I can't replace it for that. So, even if it is overpriced, it is a worthy truck. You have to decide if it is worth it to you. If you strictly look at the book value, you can't justify it. But, compare it to a gas engine truck of that era, and when you couple the torque of the diesel compared to any of the gas engines of that time, and factor in 20 mpg, it will outwork any gas engine of that time. So, it has value over other trucks of the 90's.
It won't be a maintenance free truck- common 5 speed issues, rust that plaques any 20+year old truck (check the inside bottoms of the doors), loose front end, brakes, other maintenance work.
These trucks bring more money than book because they cost money to get back into top shape, and because they tend to be worth putting the money in to.

I wouldn't sell my 98 for less than $10K. Even with 240K miles it is one of the best engines on the road. It also helps it is a southern truck.

Do you do anything or add anything to make it last longer?

Welcome, and nope, I won't choke, actually not a terrible price at all for what you got.

Ain't nothing better than a 12 valve with a stick........
