3500 Park light relay? Headlight switch

I am in the middle of finally replacing my headlight switch and harness to my headlight switch. It had been replaced before. The switch had a loose prong on the Pink/red wire and was melted there and on the Black/Yellow wire. The Black/Yellow wire was burnt where they used a blue shell wire connector.

My question is, has anyone put a relay in line on the park lamp circuit. I have been reading here that the park lamp circuit has a heavy load and causes the heat and melting. Can anyone point me to some directions to wire in a relay and is this a good idea. I have a basic 5 prong relay and harness to use.

I already know of the drill a hole in the vent trick and not to use my dimmer because of heat but I'd like to permantly fix this problem. If anyone can help chime in please as I have my dash tore apart right now.
Thanks,
Brian

Just leave the Normally Closed momentary contact switch out of the circuit.
Or wire it in, and be able to "wink" the clearance/parking lights.

OK so is this how it will go on a typical relay wiring diagram. I'm no wiring guru so I want to get it right.

30 - is the 12+ battery

87 - is to running lights

85 - is - ground

86 - is from headlight switch

Correct?

Thanks,
Brian

I'd have to pull my dash to verify the pin numbers on the relay.

This is where I pulled the info when I hooked mine up with the switch.

Did you check your recalls? I had a recall done on my truck and they replaced the headlight switch and I think they put in a relay harness (3500's only). Might want to check:

for any outstanding.

Yeah I checked the recall first. My truck did not qualify as it was built after the certain date they had posted. My trucks headlight switch and harness had been replaced one other time by a previous owner.
Thanks,
Brian

Thanks Shovelhead for the diagram and link. I had to end up working on my other truck too today so I only got to install just the headlight switch. I'll wire in the relay when I get more time.
Thanks, Brian
