Hey everybody,

I currently drive a 2006 Toyota Tacoma AC Prerunner. It is 4 cylinder 5 speed and gets like 20 MPG. I really need 4x4 and I would like some extra space in my truck for my kids and other things.

I am looking at getting a 98 2 gen longbed with 12 valve and automatic tranny. The truck is in amazing condition as most of the things that needed to be replaced have been replaced.

Wanted to see what you think it is worth.

Here are the things that have been replaced:

New Yokohama Tires 315's
New Hydroboost Brake Unit
New Rear Brake Drum and Shoe Set
New Power Steering Pump and Vacuum Pump
New Right Front ABS Sensor
New Turbo Wastegate Actuator
New Fuel Pump Assembly and Module
New Rear End Differential
New Starter
New Bilstein 5160 Shocks
New AFE Cold Air Intake

Let me know as I am super excited about joining the 12 valve club.

How many miles?

Has the Trans been built/beefed?

What state are you in?

I personally am not a big fan of the 98's as they are the first year of the 24V and mid year change form 12V, so some undocumented changes can bite you.

If it isn't terrible, I could see it still being in the 10-12K range.

Thanks for the reply. The truck has 212,000 and the trans has not been rebuilt but has been recently serviced.

I am in CA. and the truck supposedly has not been used for hauling or towing as the current owner just put 5k into it.

It is a 12v but what I need is the suicide doors for my kids to get in and out.

Any thoughts on pricing would be much appreciated. It is in really good shape with new leather interior and tons of work done.

Depending on the price it sounds like a good truck. The fact that it's a 12-valve is a big plus. I've got 387,xxx miles on my '95 now and it has never let me down. If you want it GO GET IT!

The fact that you aren't listing any speed equipment is a good sign too--sounds like it hasn't been hot-rodded. But what does "new rear-end" mean? New gears? Good replacement used? And who did the rear-end work?

As far as a new starter--it depends on the starter. The ordinary auto-parts places selling rebuilt starters sell crappy starters in my experience. Nippo Denso made the original starters for these trucks, and they are still the best. The original Denso starter in my truck lasted 10 years and I did a lot of city driving--start it up and then shut it down. Sadly instead of getting my Denso rebuilt I just swapped it for an auto parts store starter. I went through 5 auto parts store starters before I finally bit the bullet and got another Denso.

When you say new fuel pump I assume you mean a new lift pump. These are relatively inexpensive and when they start to leak do need to be changed out.

The auto trans will be the weak link, but if you are careful you can get many thousands of miles out of it. I would drive the truck and when the TC locks up and you get to 50 mph, stomp the gas and see if the RPM needle suddenly takes off--if so this will be a sign the TC is slipping in lockup.

I think this truck could be made into amazing condition with around 600-700 dollars. He is asking 18k and I think he would take 14,500 or 15k. Is that too much?

While I am not real up to date on the value of these trucks, I bought my '95 2500 2WD truck sixteen years ago with 56,000 on the ODO and with lots of upgrades for $15,000.

You might check Kelley blue book value on the truck. I bet it's a lot less than what he is asking.

Couple of thoughts, California trucks are EGR equipped, make sure yours is a Cali model, not a 49 state model. I am not sure just exactly what all is involved if it is not a real Cali model.

I know you said you need the suicide doors, but understand also that you will have to smog it since it is a 98.

1997 and older are smog exempt. Perhaps find a Ford Powerstroke crew cab? ( Gad I hate even saying that word....)

To my way of thinking, 15K is the extreme upper limit for a 98 12V with a non-built Auto....... But then I also think Y'all are nuts for paying what you do for houses.....

It does have an EGR and the Cat does need to be put in. That will cost me 250- and I need a windshield and a little paint. All that will total around 600- to get it done.

I think if I paid 14k that would be a great price for the truck, if I paid 14,500 that would be the upper limit.

I am going to sell my truck and see what happens. If I make some really good money on it then I will probably just give him the 14,500.

Robert, it was the lift pump that was replaced. The EGR was taken off ( not sure how hard that is to put back on) and it does need the CAT put back on. (250-)

How much will it cost to get this thing checked out by a mechanic? I talked to a guy today that said 250-. I thought maybe 100-150.

Make sure it has previously been licensed in Cal or you will face Lord Knows What from the Cal DMV trying to get it licensed. For sure take to a mechanic who is familiar with these trucks and with the Cal procedure for licensing them.

EGR trucks had a different exhaust manifold, intake horn, and of course the exhaust tube and egr valve/solenoid. Depending on how much of that junk was replaced it could be pretty tricky to get it back on. Not rocket science tricky but finding the parts may be pricey.

And I think that is a lot of money for what might be a pretty good truck, but it better be near perfect IMHO.

It has been licensed in CA and I am not sure about all that EGR stuff. I am going to have it looked at by a diesel mechanic and maybe he can tell me what is going on with all of that.

Yeah, I think it is near perfect. The only weak spot seems to be the tranny, which was not used for towing or anything.

The trannys are basically the old Chrysler Torqueflight 727 updated with a locking TC and an overdrive unit hung on the back. They are ok if not abused and if built by some place that knows what they are doing, are near bullet proof. I had my trans done at ATS in 2001.
