#10 or push stock plate forward?

I'm staying almost stock:
timing bump to 15.5
4" downpipe
couple of clicks on the wheel
pinched signal hose

I'm towing and looking for good tow power (no more than 250hp) and fuel economy.
So which is the best choice for me and why?
I've had a lot of input on this, but nobody has yet told me what advantages and disadvantages a number 10 or any other modified plate has over simply pushing the stock plate forward.

Advantages, can get more power ( fuel ) than with a stock plate forward, if you need it.

It also costs nothing, but neither does it if you grind your own plate to a # 10.

It will probably keep your stock auto together slightly longer as well.

Are you saying a #10 will be easier on my drivetrain than moving the stock plate forward? Would a #5 be a better choice?

Oh laaaawwwwwdy no........... The # 10 slid forward will waste your stock trans much faster.

Just slide your stock plate forward and see how you like it.

Any plate slid all the way forward can allow the governor lever to get stuck under the plate.
After sliding a plate all the way do this> http://www.pdrdiesel.com/oldsite/TechLeverAdj.htm

I've decided to grind a #10 profile.... we'll see how it works out.

well, I ground my plate to a hybrid of the #100 profile and the #10 (#10 without the intermediate step), because it was a lot easier than the #10. Clicked the starwheel a couple of clicks. It's got a LOT more grunt under 1500rpm, but still nothing above that. And EGT jumps to 1150 quickly. I'm guessing my kitty is pretty well clogged up. A 3k spring kit and 4" downpipe and a 4" pipe to the muffler are the next step when I can afford it and that is a long time off! All my income is going into rehabbing a house for retirement and getting my present house ready to sell (including an unexpected roof!). What's the biggest and best dry filter I can stuff into my stock airbox?

You could just set that poor kitty free, and fit a piece of 3" pipe there, my kitty now lives in a remote corner of my shop...[coffee]

I have a 10 plate in my truck and like the towing power. I do get great fuel usage towing and not towing. the 3000 rpm governor spring helped a bunch also. I did tow a 10,500 gvw fiver at 55 and got 15.5 on a day with no wind. I was a happy camper !
