Why gutless when towing uphill?

For the last couple of years when ever I am towing our 30' travel trailer uphill I totaly loose power!

If it is a fairly steep or long hill it will drop to about 20 - 25 MPH. And thats with the peddal floored.

On level ground or slight inclines it will go as fast as you want when towing. And when not towing it will fly over those same hills that bring it to a crawl when towing.

I removed, cleaned, and then tightened(very tight!) all the connections between the turbo and the intake manifold.

My fuel preasure stays at or above 10 PSI when floored uphill. And average about 12 PSI in normal highway driving, And about 15 PSI at idle.

I don't have a boost gauge, though in normal driving I can hear the turbo working.

Also I have tried cleaning the IAT and MAP sensors.

Anyone ever have this problem? If so how did you fix it???

Well what ever the wieght, I'll bet that that slide-out-30-footer is heavy. It looks like your truck is pretty much stock. It sounds like you're doing pretty good to me. Depending on the grade, 25 to 30 mph pulling a heavy trailer up a decent grade with a stock, auto tranny truck isn't so bad.

Whats your boost when it falls on its face? One thought is that the computer might see an overboost code and cut the fuel. You might have a stuck wastegate that is causing this, seeing as your fuel limited right now.

The trailer weighs just under 9000 pounds loaded. Plus about 450 LBs of junk in the bed of the truck.

It used to pull one of those same hills at about 45 MPH when towing the same trailer.

I'm no expert but when was the last time the trans was serviced, bands adjusted, fluid and filter changed? If your driving at 25mph WOT with 9000lbs behind ya your fluid has to be burnt.

The 47RE likes yearly fluid changes if they get hot. Do a quick search, there was a link to a yahoo article a few months back that gave the change intervals based on fluid temp. I'm used to yearly trans fluid changes and band adjusting. My trans will see hot temps 230* and above but only while on hilly side streets, these temps are hot line readings not pan so I'm not overly concerned with a yearly change. Regular 3rd locked or OD drops the temps quick to ~180*

Good luck but I'd guess bands are out of adjustment, fluid shot and for good measure throw in a tq converter.

My uneducated opinion not worth .02

I've got a 5 spd and it is gutless also. Had to unhook the comp as it was giving me the dead pedal. Wished there was something i could do to give it more power without costing a fortune.

I'm not sure of your problem, but do think you have one. I pull a 11.7K LBS fifth wheel with an 01' CTD/6 speed. I down shift to 5th & it never gets below 50 on a long hill, and I'm all stock.

what kind of Rpms is your engine putting out when climbing at these speeds?

Does the Transmission sound like it is shifting or over reving?

any chance you have extra drag on your trailer from a brake sticking?

Jack up the trailer and check to make sure there is no drag....

What kind of fuel mileage you getting out of this truck? Has your fuel mileage changed when your not pulling a trailer?

Has this truck ever been serviced and someone might have messed with your computer settings?

After all the easy things are done consider that the VP may be ready to go to sleep. Quite a number of guys have noted the loss of power before the VP failed. I really didn't notice it in mine as I don't tow heavy often but after I replaced the VP there was a considerable increase in power and responsivness.

I'd get a boost and pyro to monitor the motor first however.

The trans shifts down to 2nd(&maybe 1st a few times). Even though the trans has never had any service done to it it dose not appear to be slipping at all. I wish the engine had enough ummph to keep locked up in third, but it just runs out of steam goining up steeper hills.

I have alway had 285's on it.

Also it seems to be worse when hot.?

Last straw for me was a Nissan Titan passing me with about the sames size trailer,I got another VP and a Juice/attitude.(that ended that)
Have you checked to make sure that you're air filter is kinda clean?
