Where's my lift pump?

Just bought a used '01 Dodge Cummins quad cab long bed with only 50K on it...sweet find...kept in an air conditioned garage, never towed much (has a camper shell) and the guy was anal about the truck....anyways he told me he had the lift pump replaced but when I went to check it out to add a fuel pressure gauge...it wasn't there...there is a plate that basically passes the fuel to the injection pump but the lift pump was not there. I checked it out and the only place the lift pump could be is in the tank. Question is did Dodge have a pump they put in the tank or is this someone elses pump. Any help is appreciated so I can figure out exactly what I have here. Thanks!!

most likely in the tank. When they replace them under warranty, this is where they put them. Do the starter bump and get down by the tank and listen. It will be quieter than you expect from the block-mounted ones.

And when you get your gage in, don't fly into a panic if your fuel pressure isn't over 10 psi. I have the in-tank pump, running 8 psi idle, 6 psi cruise and 4 psi wide open. Been that way for a long time.

+1 on that. The only instance I have heard of when a plate is installed in place of the stock pump is when the dealer puts one in the tank.

It is possible that he added a Vulcan big line kit, or something similar. If so, it would be in front of the tank. You may want to do this anyway and add a second pump for better pressure. The in tank pumps seem to have lower pressure, maybe not a good thing. Chenk out the Vulcan kit. You can use different pumps that they sell.
Good luck!
