What's up with my transfer case
Hi guys. I just bought this truck about 6 weeks ago. I used to have another 2001, but I traded it off for a Duramax a few years ago[dummy] and decided I missed it so much I had to have another one.
The fellow I bought this from said he had just put a new transfer case in it. Well, its definitely not new, and I'm wondering if its even the correct case. It works just fine, but the shift pattern goes 2H-4H-N-4L. I think the shift knob says it should be 4L-N-2H-4H. I would think he just put something together backwards, but its not exactly opposite. The tag on the transfer case reads NP241DHD. I think that's the correct case, but I can't remember. Dave |
241DHD is the right #. Shift pattern on mine is 4L-N-2H-4H (front to back). Mine is a 241 DLD. I've never actually seen/worked on a DHD (PTO takeoff) but the shift pattern should be same as mine and any other Dodge.

Yeah, the shift knob and sticker under the driver's sun visor both say 4L-N-2H-4H for the pattern, top to bottom. But mine, just everyday driving, the shifter is full forward, where 4L should be, but its 2H. For some reason, mine shifts 2H-4H-N-4L. Its almost as if the patter is reversed. When we get some reasonable weather here, I'll crawl under there and take a look. FWIW, the transfer case seems to work just fine otherwise; I'm pretty sure the front axle engages, but the "4x4" idiot light does not illuminate.

The light is probably just not plugged into the socket on the axle. Good Luck - RJ |

It almost sounds like someone might have installed the the shift arm on the case backwards.

I think you have an older T case in there. My '96 had a 241 case with the 2H-4H-N-4L pattern. My '02 has the 4L-N-2H-4H pattern.

And, I must correct myself. The tag on my case says 241DLD, NOT 241 DHD. Not that I'm gonna miss the PTO, but what are the differences between the two? Thanks! Dave |

But it's also true that the DLD is very stout. Many have drag raced for years, with 4x4 launches, and had no problems. Very few threads ever... mention transfer case problems!! IMO, it's a case or very good (DLD) and even better (DHD). Here is a post I 'bookmarked' from 3 yrs ago that makes good reading.... "There is a 241DLD and a 241 DHD, both of which can be found in our years. ...... I have had my 241DLD apart recently to upgrade the head gear for a manual conversion, and through a few years of heavy power, stall launches, full 4X4 drags, big tires, etc. Everything looked absolutely brand new. Even the chain was tight as can be. I was going to upgrade to a DHD, but when this one has done me right, I'll leave it alone. They only have one little flaw, and that's the output shaft bearing retaining snap ring. They tend to break, allowing the shaft to walk inwards, which can be damaging. There is a fix available at any trans shop that will rectify this, and all that needs to be taken apart is driveline removal and output housing removal. Good luck and don't worry about DLD's." RJ |
Fact is the DHD has a bigger output shaft.... 2-3/16ths vs 1-7/8ths. Correct me if I'm wrong, but my HO truck should have the DHD case, with the PTO right? It looks to me like someone has been in this transfer case I got. The case itself if fairly clean, while the tailshaft housing is very dirty... its obviously from a different unit. Can that larger output shaft be made to work with the DLD internals? Hell, maybe he just swapped driveshafts. I don't mind having a "mutt", just want to know what all I got going on. D |
