whats with my engine fan running

the last two mornings it has been around 45-50* when i start my truck, and i let it idle about 2 minutes before driving light footed to work...a whopping distance of 1 mile.

i've noticed when i pull out of the driveway the first 2-3 times I bring the rpms up going thru the gears i can hear the engine fan running. why is it engaging? the truck usually runs cool enough even on the hottest days that the fan never engages.

is the clutch going bad in it?

Not an answer, but mine seems to do that also for the first mile or so.

Don't Thermal Fan Clutches Use Silicone Fluid? When It's Cold It Thickens Up And Probably Needs A Few Minutes To Get Warm And Thin Out. The Only Reason I Say That Is Mine Does It Also So Does Our '99' F-550.

The oil in the clutch needs to loosen up a bit before she can start slippin like its supposed to. Nothin wrong with it, mine does the same thing.

That is actually proof that the viscous clutch is good. The fluid settles when not running and produces the same condition that occurs when the clutch locks up under hot running conditions. after a couple of minutes, centrifugal force redistributes the fluid and the clutch unlocks.

Mine does it and has for a very long time. I wouldn't worry about it.
