takes all of 15mins to do.
remove belt
drain coolant (advise removing lower rad hose, as you can easily break the drain on the rad, then you need a rad!)
remove two bolts, remove water pump, or place large drain pan to catch coolant once you pull the pump out, instead of removing lower rad hose.

replace pump
replace coolant
replace fan belt

time spent likely less than 1/2 hour.

there is no veh I know of that has a simpler set up for a water pump

I know a guy at work whose pump failed last year. I explained very thoroughly how to replace it. He didn't believe me and said "I need diesel specialist" so off he went to shop and spent $450 to have it replaced. He then proceeded to tell everyone how much he "saved" Guy is a moron and I work with him every day

Kind of, if they keep that money flowing...They might just put it towards their 401K or go to Wal-Mart and you know where money goes from there...

It is so simple. This past weekend I replaced my water pump, tensioner, installed a Fluidamper, rebuilt the alternator, installed a griffin radiator, cleaned my shroud, coolant tank, and washer tank, installed new radiator hoses, new belt, powdercoated intercooler pipes, and new intercooler couplers / clamps. I also cleaned the engine since the water pump made a mess. I think the last 2 times I paid a shop to flush the cooling system they simply drained and re-filled. I can't stand paying for service as it is never done right. I just had the ball joints done and they damaged the axle seals.

The question I would ask is: Incompetent or just greedy?

I am a novice mechanic and I changed my water pump in about an hour. This includes flushing the coolant system. Now that I know what to expect, I could change one in about 15 minutes. Even quicker with a second person. Toughest part for me was getting both hands in the area reaching around the fan shroud holding the water pump in place while starting one of the bolts. Must have dropped that bolt 6 times. With someone holding the pump or the bolt would have taken seconds to put the new pump in place. Also would be quicker to put the serpintine belt back on with someone underneath the truck making sure the belt was where it needed to be. Can't imagine charging $600 to do this. Water pump cost me about $42 with lifetime warrantee, anti-freeze and distilled water less than $20.

If you haven't already done this, be aware thet the water pump is the lowest point in the cooling sysm, so you will need to catch the entire amount of coolant.
