VP44 on its way out???

Well I hate for my first post to be about my VP44 lol, I think its dieing. Well yesterday I jumped in the truck to go home, truck is almost out of diesel, its in the red, truck starts up and lopes really bad for 2 or 3 seconds like it has air in the lines, then it runs fine. I went the house about a mile away and shut it off, went to start it to go get diesel and it does it again for about 3 or 4 seconds before it clears up and runs fine. I fill up and the truck starts normal again, started thinking it was getting air somehow, this morning it did the same thing, it loped for a second or 2 and idled fine. I was driving about 50mph and got the dead pedal for not even a second, CEL come on with a code of 251 and 252. So is there anything I can fix on the VP44 or just wait till it gets worse and replace the whole thing? How much does a hot rod VP run and where can I find one?

while many here claim the p0216 to be the kiss of death.....it pales in comparison to a 0251. You need a pump.

Ahh come on your not suppose to tell me that lol !!!! I went out and started it and it loped for about 5 seconds and I killed it, fired it back up and it did it again for about another 5 seconds before it cleared up. I was driving home and hammered on it and it never missed a beat. I was driving about 65mph on the way home and at one point it felt like the engine died for half a second, good enough to jerk the truck pretty good. I just wanna make sure that there isnt something else this could be like a broken wire somewhere, I dont mind changing the pump, infact Im on vacation right now so this would be the perfect time to do it, I just dont wanna throw parts at it, especially a 1000 dollar pump! Thank you J Body for the reply

Alright now its all down hill, it will start and run on 2 or 3 cylinders and never clear up. I guess Im gonna load it up on a trailer and haul it to the dealer to determine it is the injection pump

Why would you do that? J BODY already told you it was the IP. If you want to verify this yourself go here and lookup P0251. By the way, J BODY is a DC tech.

Another thing.... a HRVP is right around $1600. Stock replacements have been seen for around $1050.

If you are mechanically inclined the swap is not that difficult. I did mine and actually left the high pressure lines in place, but you'll need an extra set of delicate hands to do that. I just told one of my employees we'd be going out back for a talk if he broke them! No, I'm just kidding. Okay, maybe I'm not, but it got him on the right page.

Hey Smoke, I followed your link for the codes and now I'm confused again...LOL. I have people here telling me my p0181 codes means my IP is out or on its way out. The link shows that the code means "fuel temperature sensor 'A' cicuit range/performance". So, does this mean there is a sensor that needs to be replaced or does the whole IP need replacement. I've seen a couple of references to temperature problems regarding the vp44, but not a lot of detail on it. This is my work truck and my only source of transportation and I want to get it fixed ASAP. I also want to make sure that I'm having the right work done on it. I know it is out of warranty because I have over 235k miles on it, so it's going to be out of pocket expense...ouch! Thanks for your time.

*not so bad* code
P0216 - Injection pump electronic timing failure. Thast what my last IP died of. but it took over 8 months to crap out.

*real bad......like its too late already type code
P1688 - Internal Fuel Injection Pump Controller Failure

I really don't know what those other codes are you guys are talking about but P1688 & P0216 are killers of the VP44.

P0251 Injection Pump Fuel Metering Control "A" Malfunction (Cam/Rotor/Injector)
P0252 Injection Pump Fuel Metering Control "A" Range/Performance (Cam/Rotor/Injector)

The vp 44 is shot!
If you can swing the $1800 get the Industrial Injection SHOVP44

Everyone who has one really likes it.

P1688 - Internal Fuel Injection Pump Controller Failure

P0181: fuel injection pump failure. "note: this code is caused by an internal fuel injection pump failure". Diag basically says if the code is present (every key cycle), to replace the pump. You could clear the code and see if it re-sets. If not, you are most likely on borrowed time. If so, you are shopping for a pump. If you have drivability complaints with the dtc present: won't start, won't run, lugging, white fuel smoke, eng miss......put a pump on it.

diag for P1688: internal fuel injection pump failure is pretty much the same.

Mine did the same thing. It would run fine for several weeks, and suddenly act up for a few days, then it would disappear again. Towards the end though, it was doing it everyday. My symptoms were loss of power, almost like a limp mode; ;throttle had no effect.
