volt meter drops

2001 2500 diesel 170,000 automatic
i have had the volt meter drop to the off position while driving ,the check gauges light comes on , truck keeps running, when i turn off the truck and re start the gauge comes back to normal
could this be the Altenator ,or a relay ??

Always start by checking battery connections. Make sure they are as good as they can possibly be.

Check your alternator fuse, did some work on a 2000 once accidentaly shorted the alternator wire and blew the fuse which caused the same results you're describing. Like 1-2-3 said, start wit you batt connections, then check the fuse (it's the one in the fuse panel under the hood that actually bolts in) if that's good get your alternator tested.

check the ground wire to the chassis it will corrode and not allow a ground for the gages
