volt meter drops
2001 2500 diesel 170,000 automatic
i have had the volt meter drop to the off position while driving ,the check gauges light comes on , truck keeps running, when i turn off the truck and re start the gauge comes back to normal
could this be the Altenator ,or a relay ??

Check your alternator fuse, did some work on a 2000 once accidentaly shorted the alternator wire and blew the fuse which caused the same results you're describing. Like 1-2-3 said, start wit you batt connections, then check the fuse (it's the one in the fuse panel under the hood that actually bolts in) if that's good get your alternator tested.
