Re:Vibration in drive train problem solved

The dealer doesn't know for sure yet, but they're thinking that the vibration is coming from the shocks. I just talked to them on the phone and they said the u-joints, axle, drive shaft and wheels look ok. The only thing they can think of at this point is shocks, so they're taking two techs on a drive to see if they can narrow it down. I'll cross my fingers that the solution will be a cheap one.

Re:Vibration in drive train problem solved

Is there any easy way to check the Ball Joints? I experience vibration through the drivers side floor board from ~ 15 - 50 mph. My tires are already cupped and have only about 6k on them. oh, I have 80K on my truck.

Don't feel bad, Jack. Most guys buy the 4x4 because of an inadequate........well.........you get the idea. We 4x2 guys have no issues, we are secure in our own.......well......right Dennis?

Re:Vibration in drive train problem solved

I have done lots of work 4x4 lifted trucks and drive shaft angle and vibration are the biggest issue. Seams to be such a problem that guys just live with vibrations instead of finding a cure. I couldnt so I had to hunt down any and every drive shaft manufacturer to build what I wanted to solve any vibration I was having. This entailed rotating the pumpkins to better align with the drive shaft and using CV joints. It cost some money but I ended up with a lifted high horsepower truck that could cruise down the freeway at any speed with no vibration in 4wd or 2wd! After talking with many drive shaft shops I found out that lots of stock drive shafts straight off the assembly line are out of balance or mis aligned.

Re:Vibration in drive train problem solved

I had aftermarket shocks on the truck, vibration was there. Dealer put stock shocks back on the truck. Now she runs like she's new. I can't believe the difference. The bad thing is that the other shocks were only 6 months old and were supposed to be really good. Guess not. I'm just glad we figured it out.

Jack, I've got the same problem in my truck and it is driving me nuts. Thanks for the tip. Was it the front or rear shocks that did it? Mine seems to be coming from the rear. Also, what brand shocks were you running that caused it?

They replaced all the shocks and I didn't test in between the front and rear installs. Sorry

Re:Vibration in drive train problem solved

How would the shocks create a vibration in your truck? If the shocks were bolted down securely they shouldn't cause a vibration since they are a non moving part unless being articulated.

I still think the front driveshafts are out of balance from the factory.

The problem started right around when I put aftermarket shocks on, and stopped when I put stock shocks back on the truck. My pull to the right issue also went away and the truck drives straight. Don't ask me why, but it's true.

Re:Vibration in drive train problem solved

I had a 2002 short box 4 X4 , cummins that vibrated so bad my foot would fall asleep on the gas pedal , and floor boards. I took it to three dodge dealers, 2 drive trainshops and finally a shop that does alot of custom diesel work. However none of these guys could fix it and I couldn't stand it any longer and sold the truck. I wish I could have found this message 6 months ago!!!! I had skyjacker leveling kit in the truck and this is what the dealers blamed for my trouble , the diesel expert at the power shop assured me it was a problem with the engine being out of balance as it he said he could feel it when he brought the revs up in neutral. His advice was to go lemon law but I just bit the bullet and sold the truck. The vibration did seem to get worse after the truck was lifted , is this just because this amplified the problem?? Could you forward the parts list and aprox cost for the fix as other than this problem I loved my truck and would consider buying another. thanks million

I know this is really old thread but I'm having the exact same issue and it's been driving me nuts trying to diagnose. You don't know how happy I am to finally find this thread and wish I'd found it sooner. I can relate to the guy who sold his truck because of this, it ruins the highway drivability of the truck.

I started by pulling the front drive shaft. Vibes where still there so I moved on to the front axle. I've replaced all the bushings in the passenger side axle shafts, the u-joint and the vacuum actuator. Vibe is still there.

After thinking about it, I did put some after market shocks on maybe around the same time this started. So first thing tomorrow I'm off to pick up a set of OEM shocks.
