Valvey sound help me solve

Started the truck up and puff of white and a little bit of hesitation/ hiccups. Started going down the road and no power, so I limp it back home.
Throw the scan tool on it and nothing showing , go back down the road with scanner on and it acts all normal ,shows nothing, and drives fine. Thing almost sounds like a old 7.3 power stroke valvetrain.
Im gonna pull the valve cover and just take a look. Where should I start on diagnosing this issue?

Check valve clearance, and take notes on what you find before adjusting to proper specs.
The Cummins can be low on power without codes for a lot of reasons like air filter, fuel filter, lift pump etc.

Will do. It has fairly large cold air intake that’s clean & airdog fuel system that Has under 500 miles since filter/ water separater change also shoving 14psi through 1/2 inch lines to a untapped vp with under 10k miles on it . ( I know they can crap the bed with little miles though but U would think A pump code would be in there if so .

When you do the valves, please measure the current clearance and write it down before adjusting.
This can help you and others in the future.

I’ll check this also and report back . We’ve making hay and I haven’t had a chance yet.
