Safehaul, keep us posted as to what you do, and how it turns out. Sounds like you've got a good head on your shoulders and know what you are doing. Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

To do it or not
Safehaul makes a good point.
As for me, I don't have any regrets about installing a mid-range Fuller transmission in the Dodge 1 ton. I can't buy an rebuilt NV5600 much less a replacement truck for the $2,800 I have in total cost in my conversion.
I own larger trucks and had to de-rate two of them on GVW so I can operate them or hire help to drive OTR. I lost my CDL in 1996 because of unstable blood pressure. One day it's fine, the next, it's borderline high even though I take meds. Been that way for 13 years, so a CDL is not possible in my case. For others it could be medical as well, or just don't want to be bothered by the regs imposed.
I have always made a buck or two from situations other people did not want to tackle. The failures for the NV5600 is one of those, especially a 4 X 4. As the cost of replacement transmissions and parts reliability remains an issue, some owners will want to bail on their their trucks. How many will want to spend $3,500 to $4,500 for a trans and another $1,200 to $1,500 for R & R. Some of these trucks will get down to less than the value of the engine for some owners that feel they have to sell. By having a Fuller trans replacement kit ready to go, it will be an easy two day turnaround to have the truck ready to roll again. For other owners, a replacement mid-range trans is just a cost of doing business and buying reliability.
Who else but Fuller will give you a 250,000 warranty on a new trans? Gezz, I bought a new trans (FO-8406AWS) for $152.50 and turned it into a NEW FSO-8406A for another $370 by changing the input shaft and mating countershaft gear. I don't know of another transmission family that affords this kind of upgrade and interchagabiliy. With the NV5600 you're STUCK with it no matter what.
As for me, I'll do it many more times, especially if I get the 4 X 4 adapter worked out because it will open up many more conversion possibilities for fleet operators and others who need to convert for whatever reason. Judging from the number of website hits, there are at least 21,491 who have at least been interested it what is happening with this conversion.

Eaton made/makes a really small ten speed double counter shaft transmission. i have seen them in those L8000 fords.
Dont know if they still make them though. but i think one would easily fit under our trucks. I forget what model they were it started with RTLO -

There is nothing illegal about what I am doing. Please, if you do not know what you are talking about then just keep quiet. My truck commonly goes thru weigh stations and is scrutinized often. Your comment is unwarranted and unwelcome here.
I know ever single word of the Federal Carrier Motor Vehical manual.. so you dont want to even try calling me out on this.. I have corrected state patrol officers who have thought like you do.. don't try it, you will lose. This is one area I know inside and out.. Hell I had 2 state patrol cops that wanted to put me out of service for having no cdl.. they felt really stupid when we pulled out the rule book. I pulled away with a big smile on my face.

Chansey,
How did your truck end up? I cant find the websites you listed and yes I know this is 2 years old. I want to swap out my auto and am interested in doing such a swap myself.

I get the same DOT stuff that you guys talk about. My only difference is I have a varied stable of trucks and trailers. Some combos will require CDLs while others will NOT. My 99 and the 30 footer (10k +14k) do not require them, while the 2007 and the same trailer DO (12.5k and 14k).. I can pull my 21ft (9900lb) with either. BUT, I DO have to abide by ALL of the same rules otherwise (inspections, medical card, placards ETC).. Makes it tough but we get by, it helps (not sure why) that I have NOT FOR HIRE on my placards, guess since I am hauling my own equipment and supplies lessens the pain some.. Good luck to you guys trying to make money hauling with a ton truck, its not a great market these days..

New thought.. using 4th gear 1:1 why not go with single 22.5" wheels and tires in the rear (not duallies).. those are rated for like 10k each tire arent they? each half inch is good for about 50 revs.. I dont know how tall they would be but I would think I'd gain a few inches at least.. so 200 revs minimum.. those tires are good for like 150,000 miles too..
I would think the weight of a single 22.5 vs dual 16" would be close..
crazy idea?
BTW.. here is my load from hell 29,950 lbs.. OUCH

I was just pointing out the facts to him regarding his previous post. Anyway, you know what's even funnier, his id is Safehaul, but he overloads the truck and trailer. Sometimes I like stirring the pot. Doesn't surprise me. I own a transport company and see this all the time. Oh well carry on!
