Truck slams into Reverse
 

I got a 99 2500, 4x4 auto, with 210k miles, just had the rear pinon seal replaced and new u-joints (150 miles ago) When i put the truck in reverse, it slams/clunks into gear, like there is a lot of play in the driveline. Then on occasion, when in reverse, it sounds/feels like something is grinding in the rear end, so I don't know if it's a tranny issue, rear diff issue, or u-joint is bad (but just replaced). It sometimes clunks when I put it in to drive also. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, great forum!!

Mine did the same thing so i replaced the u-joints also, but it still does it. So when i have to go to reverse from drive i put it into neutal for just a second then in to reverse seems to cure it for now. Also i have heard that if you have limited slip in your rear end they can become sloppy and loose. Hope this helps.

The old 727 Torqueflite trannies (which our newer truck transmissions are descended from) did the same thing - those who cared to not beat up their driveline components always slipped quickly into neutral for a few seconds before engaging reverse, as a matter of habit.

thanks, I didn't know if there was a way to adjust the backlash. I'll attempt to remember to slip into neutral before reverse. Thanks again

210K I imagine that the T-case chain is a bit on the "sloppy" side too.

J Body, one of the guy at work thought that might be the issue as well....do you know if there is an adjustment that can be done to that chain in the case? Or should I even concern myself with it? Thanks again
