Mine did the same thing back in July. Took it to the dealer they told me it was toast. I didnt trust them so I took it somewhere else and they told me the same thing. I ended up having it rebuilt. I dont really know anything about transmissions so they both could have been pulling my leg.

Could be something as "simple" as the governor pressure, or the sensor.

That is the usual cause for "limp mode", not starting out in 1st.

Do the key cycles and get any codes in your odometer readout. Most common prob is gov psi transducer and solenoid. Dealer parts counter should be very familiar with the part numbers and I would be nearly all of them have it in stock. If you can change a trans filter, you can install these parts.

That is what the guy who rebuilt mine thought. He tried that first but it didnt fix it. Not to say that is not what is wrong with this particular transmission.

3rd gear starts are limp mode, 2nd gear starts are something else..governor pressure, etc. of course, 2nd gear starts can lead to 3rd gear starts. it sounds like it's dying, but possibly may not be.

Quite often the tranny codes don't show up with the key on/off method.
I'd try getting it scanned at Autozone or other parts store.

I would recomend taking it to a reputable tranny shop that works on these diesel trucks. They can put it on the scope and find out what is really wrong. Could just be a speed sensor or something simple like that. It is worth the professional diagnostics IMO.
