Transmission codes question

I have been having a transmission problem . When I stop the tranny is not shifting down to 1st so when I start off again the truck is starting in 2nd gear. I can manually shift to 1st and as soon as I apply throtle I shift into drive and the tranny works as it should. I talked to someone from SMR transmission and he said that it was probably a governor pressure sensor and that I should check the codes to see if that were right. My question is can I check these codes or do I need to take it to someone that has a code reader. If it is this switch I want to put an SMR throttle body in so I need to isolate the problem so that I will only have to drop the pan 1 time. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

you can get the codes by turning the key 3 time and then leaving the key on , read the codes in the mileage display

Yes, that is normal if there aren't any codes.
Codes would come after the P PCU and the P ECU.

Have to remember though, not all codes can be retrieved using that method.
(for some reason known only to the Dodge engineers)

I'd still run it over to Autozone or the like, they should be able to pull the codes for free.

Thanks for all of your help guy's. J Body I talked with the folks at DTT transmission yesterday and that was his exact advise. thanks and yes I can handle all the mechanical issues so I can save some of those labor dolars. BTW the folks at DTT are really some nice folks. He told me the most likely problem then gave me the OEM part number and when I asked about putting one of his valve bodies on he straight out told me not right now for my application so when the time comes there will be a DTT tranny in my ride.
