Tranny/TC/Clutch bad noise???

I was coming home from out of town today and all the sudden when i got off the gas going down a hill at 75 and it felt like a jolt, or miss, or pop.. so i gassed it and it went away....as soon as i got off the gas it did it again, so when i get to town and the first light i take off from i hear like a metal popping or grinding sound and it sounds like its from right under the shifter, and it seems to get worse in 4x4, actually ive had a grinding/vibration in 4x4 for some time. i'm running a southbend dd3600, ive always had troubles shifting into gears with, but just figured it was nature of the beast!! Anyone got any ideas, tranny, Transfer case or clutch? thanks for any info!!

I'd pull the t-case, at the very least the tail housing of it. There is a snap ring that holds the tailshaft back, has a tendency of breaking, especially if it has been reused. If that's ok, pull transfer case apart and look for anything broken.

I see int he sig your state 220K is the miles? if so you are end of the life of the NV4500 behind a diesel especially if any power increases. My 99's original started having problems about 220k and finally at 250k no 3rd great would pop out of 1st and wouldn't come out of 5th some times, that truck only saw unloaded high way with stock power. My 2003 lasted 163k as modded in signature. Primarly lost 5th gear and needed new main shaft so had rebuilt since labor was the same. bearing and syncro's not completely wore out but probably only had another 20k in them.

Usually if a T-Case lets go you have no 4x4 or the planatary lets go and you have nothing. Just my experience.
