Tranny problem, whats next ?

Hey Guys,
I am new to this site and would like your help with the transmission in my 01 automatic. The truck which has 206k miles, has developed second gear starts after it has been run down the highway at a consistant speed. I have used every suggestion from this site but still have problems. The trans. was rebuilt twice in the last 2 years and a heavy TC installed. Shortly after the second rebuild it started to shift in and out of high gear, this was fixed by grounding a wire at the throttle sensor. The vehicle runs fine around town but starts in second after a long run. It runs good after a brief shut down. to date we have replaced both tranny sensors (twice), replaced the valve body twice, (the second valve body got a resister on the PCU), reset the APPS per your instructions. Whats next? Your help is appreciated.

Try replacing the gov. pressure selenoid and transducer...the selenoid is magnetic internally and externally, and with rebuilds, 9 times out of ten a good flush or fluid refill of the tranny will stir up metal shards and clog it up, causing failure...The gov selenoid and transducer work as a pair to govern pressures as a system configurated with the valvebody. Also, if the gov selenoid goes the transducer says adios as well. Both parts run about $200 total at dealer..take about an hour to install and should fix your problem.

Thank you for the reply, Both the Gov. and Tansducer have been replaced several times with no luck. Maybe a Dodge part will work instead of the aftermarket ones. Also, I failed to mention that low gear can not be found by pulling the shift lever into low when the problem starts, but runs fine after a brief cool down. It may be time for a six speed. Again, thanks for your help

i had the same issue over the summer if I left it idle for a long time kinda fixed itself but i thought it to be the PCM

I would lose 1 st and OD until i would restart it, hasn't done it in a few monthes, I think I burnt up the PCM trying to fix another trans issue ended up frying the overhead display and having this 1st /OD problem mentioned above,

Aftermarket sensors are problematic as I have found. Another issue is parts change around 2000. Older not interchangeable.
I really think the rebuild is faulted in seals. Manual low must give low from VB.

The truck ran fine yesterday, Today, 2nd gear starts after a few miles on the road. I stopped at the Dodge dealer and had it scanned. The trans pressure was at 108 pounds sitting at an idle in park. Shut off the engine, restart and good as new for a while. I ordered a new transducer and gov selonoid and will install on monday. I will keep you posted on the outcome.

I am new, this is my first post. I have a 01 with 100,000 and last year I started getting 2nd gear starts. Coleman Taylor in Memphis put in a new gov. pressure selenoid an sensor. Worked fine till a month ago. Now It will slip in 1st at fast take offs, then shifts fine. I can pull it down to 1st and pulls away good. Is the sensor the same thing as the transducer. By the way they told me the pan and fluid were real clean. Thanks.

I now have the same problem. But if I manually shift it to first it will still stay in second most of the time. Is this more of a problem then just the sensors.

If you cannot force down into low with shift lever something more that a tranducer(sensor) or governor pressure solenoid is wrong.
There is possibility that you have mistaken second for first and it is shifting from 1-3 and missing second gear. If this is case the KD band is out of adjustement or has broken internal strut. Drop pan for confirm and properlly service tranny.

Possibly fixed

I had factory sensors installed on Monday, I drove the truck for a few hours today and did not have a problem. It may have been the after market units. I will drive the truck a little more this week and report on any problems. Lets hope the Dodge sensors fix this ongoing pain. Thanks to all for the suggestions.
