Tranmission Shift Events

Folks,
There was a thread a few months back but I can't seem to find it. It listed the transmission shift events. Since it got really cold in southern Alberta I think my TC has stopped locking up. Truck is in the sig.
Accelerating gradually from dead stop to 100kpm/60mpg should the events be 1 - 2 - 3 - tcl - 4 - tcl ?

Tranny is stock.

My first indicator that something was up was that I 99% sure that during the summer, rolling along a flat stretch of hwy at 100 kph on cruise, I seem to remember I was at about 1100 rpm. Now, in cold weather I am at about 1600 rpm in the exact same scenario. Once I know the transmission events, I will take it for a drive and count them before I stress too much about other stuff.

Thanks in advance for help.

I'm thinking that you may be remembering your RPM's incorrectly. I'm sure that the trans in my truck is working properly, although that 3rd, tcl process I never seem to catch. Regardless, at 115KPH the motor is my rig is spinning along at just about 1850RPM-1900RPM. I'm positive that the RPM range, at that speed, is correct for my setup. If my motor is supposed to be spinning at only 1200 RPM or so at hwy speed than I am really missing the boat on some spectacular fuel economy. Of course, that would be my cursed luck (or lack of!)

Cheers!

I can tell you that on mine with 4:10 gears I am turning 2000 RPM at 60 MPH (100KPH) Mine shifts 1-2-3 right out of the hole and then 4 at about 40 and then lock up at about 45. All this depends on throttle position. Is your throttle valve cable to the transmission adjusted correctly?
My Powerstroke has 3:55 gears and is at 2000 RPM at 70 MPH, the Dodge with 3:55's should be about the same.

That is the shift pattern for a gradual acceleration. Sometimes I accelerate so gradual it wont go into 3rd lock up (don't have the proper signal and pressures). But as said above it also depends on how you are accelerating. If I accelerate hard, it usually runs 1-2-3-4-lock up.

Also, you would not be running 1100 RPM at 100kph unless you have extremely large tires or tight gearing. 1600 RPM sounds about right for 100kph with 3.55's ( I can't remember exact RPMS, but again it depends on your tires)

Tires are stock size. I can't remember exact size but they are about what is on the door post. As for gearing, it is whatever Dodge put into it. Yeah, I know, how boring. Thanks for info folks, I will count tranny events next time I am out in truck.

Nothing boring about that. Mine is bone stock, stock tires, stock engine, stock exhaust and it is two wheel drive to boot!

I didn't think they started going into lockup in 3rd until the commonrail era/3rd gen trucks. I wish my 47RE in my '96 would lockup automatically in 3rd some before shifting to 4th. It will only lockup in 3rd if "O/D Off" is selected.

1100rpm is not correct for 60mph in any gear. 1600rpm is about right for 3.55 gears and stock tires in 4th gear of an auto trans.

Mine will lock up in third If I have overdrive turned off or if I am on the throttle hard.

My 01 always hits 3rd lockup unless I am in it really hard. The 98 does not do this at all. It only locks in 4th and it sliiiidddess in. Huge difference in the two.

The shift pattern seems to change from year to year, the computer was programmed differently. My 02 will shift 1-2-3-3rdLU-4thLU, if accelorate slowly it can go 1-2-3rd-3rdLU-4unlock-4thLU.

I just did a search and can't find one piece of information. What transmission do I actually have in this truck?

If your truck is a 2000, you will have a 47RE Transmission

Where the heck did my sig go? Truck is a 2000, 2500 auto. Is that considered a good tranny or weak?

For 2000, that is the correct sequence. 99 and earlier, it only locked in 4th.

I read the huge writeup yesterday (approx 10 pgs long) from a guy who rebuilt his 47RE. I don't know if I have THAT kind of time if this tranny ever starts misbehaving but what it taught me was that this tranny may not be rock solid the way Dodge built it BUT if it gets weak, a built one by Goerend or ATS will fix it up.
