Is there a way to test the wires to the speed sensor?

Use ohmeter. Should have 600 -900 ohms. I allow drive shaft to spin and it will generate a AC votage signal.
Oh! you said wires!!! Engine running, dc voltmeter across wires. Read about 5 volt. With drive shaft turning(very slow) the non black wire should change from 5 v to zero and back.

Not making connection in terminals. Wires damaged at terminals. Wires damaged elsewhere. Should have code for open circuit or shorted circuit.
