Test drove a truck and have some questions...
First of all I probably will not buy this truck because I am a little skeptical. It was a 2001 Ram 2500 Cummins 6 speed QC short bed 4x4 (The perfect truck). It had 86k miles which I dont care for but I figured hey its a cummins it will run for another 200k. I got in and noticed gauges coming down the a-pillar and the saleman told me the previous owner had chipped it, that was the only thing he knew about it. The dealer wanted 19900 but I told him I was looking for something around 17k and he said they could do it. So I drove it and as soon as I let the clutch out I knew something wasn't right. The truck lurched and I could feel the clutch pedal pulsing under my foot. At first I thought it was me because I havent driven a diesel with a 6 speed in a while. I know not to give it much if any fuel when you are taking off from a stop. I got used to the truck and it still did it. I think it was clutch chatter. I got back and told the salesman and he said they would put a new clutch in it if I would buy it.
The next part is the power... The truck ran really good but when I was going along at 1500rpm and 4th, or any gear for that matter and floored it, it pulled hard up to 2500rpm and it was like hitting a brick wall. Is that supposed to happen? I know they make their power down low but I didn't think it would just instantly stop like that. Do you think is has LP or IP issues?
Thanks,
Joey

Hi Joey,
My truck defuels at about 2700rpm and you loose all the power. The computer is doing this on purpose. The clutch pedal sounds pretty bad but if the dealer will put a new clutch in than do that for sure. The gauges should tell you if the LP is bad if it had a fuel pressure gauge anyway. When he said it was chipped you might want to find out if the pump wire was tapped. Since the dealer knows it was chipped you may want to check on the warrenty if it still has one.

I remember test driving a first generation, I think it was a 91. I thought something was wrong with the truck too, that thing just felt like it shut down at a certain rpm. I hated that feeling, seemed to come on pretty early. I don't notice it in my 24v near as much. I drove an old Ford IDI turbo for a few years, never did that, but then it needed those rpm's to make power. The dodges are pretty loud in the cab but I'm enjoying my 3.55 diff and the low rpm's @70. Comfy cruisin'
