Swaping gears out for fuel mileage?
 

I currently have 4.10 Gearing and my mileage is typically around 12-14.7 hand calculated if I baby it. I will be getting a new Southbend clutch this next week and then some F-1 1.6 injectors to also assist in my quest for more mileage! I was also wondering if I swapped out for some taller gears to drop my rpm lower will this also help?? I usually always have the edge on level 1 or 2. Let me know. I am open to all ideas.

Some 3.54's would help and since you have a 6 speed they wont take away much pullin power. What size tires are you runnin?

Im running 295 75 16. Any idea what a gear change will cost for a 4X4?

Also an idea....could I go to a junkyard and swap them axles or is anyone else wanting to change ratios?? I'm located in SD but will be traveling back to MI this summer so I'd be willing to do a swap somewhere to.

I asked the edge ppl about which power level is most fuel efficient while cruising on the highway. One technician's oppinion was that it would be power level 5 or 6 if you have it activated since these are the levels that give you the most timing advance. This made sense to me as long as what you are doing is cruising! if you do lots of high speed passing you can throw that out the window!

I'm also contemplating swapping my 4.11 with 3.54's as well. A friend of mine has a complete dually diff assy. for $500 cdn. My truck is 4x2

I'm looking at going the other way. 3:55's to 4:10. The easiest way is to swap the entire rear assembly. I've priced gears and the carrier needed. Parts at the best are about $750.00 (new) Figure about $500.00 to install.

I want 4:10's for towing my fiver. 3:55 work good for a light truck getting me about 18.5-19 on the hwy at 68mph. Towing is consistant 10-11 mpg, sometimes less. I'm sure the mpg will increase towing to 12-13 consistant with the load off the engine with the lower gears.

So if anyone does swap out, that has a 4:10 please let me know. It seems every time this comes up, everyone is more than a 1000 miles away. Must be a Dana 80 rear.
