I've been trying to get to the IAT sensor for several weeks, but I can't get anything on it. Can't even pull the wire. I'm to the point where I'm going to get someone to fab some tools, but I thought I'd check here & see if anyone's done that or anything else.

I've looked at a couple of other 2nd gen. trucks. My '02 has a lot of "stuff" around there that the others don't, so that's the problem.

 

My IAT sensor wasnt that bad to get off. I did it last summer so I may be wrong but I thought you could use a spark plug socket to get it off but I may be wrong. Its kinda hard to get to but, use an extension on your socket. The plug was difficult but u just gotta pull up kinda hard on the little plastic tabs and out at the same time. It's a lot easier if you climb up on your bumber to do it. If I think of anything else i'll let u know.

I hear ya......it is a pain....apparantely and few guys have relocated the sensor to somewhere around their airbox/BHAF.....I need to find some time so I can research that. Would be much easier to service then.

Ive only cleaned mine once - because its so hard to get at....this is not an easy task if u have short arms. A ladder helps....I ended up practically laying on top of my valve cover. Use a 3/8 ratchet, 6 ' extension, universal joint and 22 mm (or 13/16&quot deep socket.

my fuel milage is getting worse with every tank i put in it. I am starting to get discouraged. i started out getting 16.5 mpg, and after 7 tanks, im down to 13.5.

i added a bhaf, new fuel filter, and started running Power Service to try to help out. but it still decreases. >

i will try to clean the IAT sensor soon to see if that helps.

 

Your lucky. Mine had dropped from 13.5 mpg to 11.4 mpg. I just filled up today and thats what it calculated to. 11.4....someone HELP!!!! I do have 360 lbs of sand in the back under my tonneau cover. My driving is probably 50% expressway running 70 at about 2200 rpm's. the rest is 25% highway running about 60 at 2000 rpms and 25% in town driving. ANYONE WANT TO HELP ME? I cleaned my IAT this last summer. Maybe I will just replace it. Does anyone have the part number for it? Thanks

 

Mileage trick #1....Keep the go fast pedal at around 1800 RPM and the speed needle around 62 max.

You will achieve better fuel mileage, less exposure to the guys with the flashy lights on top of their mobile offices and you will be driving your CTD longer while waiting for the "Spring Blend" of fuel to come back... ;D ;D ;D :-X

I pulled mine today and it measured 23K @ 30 degrees. It should read between 30-36K at 32 degrees. Looks like I should get a new one soon. It was clean as a whistle, though. Last time I pulled it out, 35,000 miles ago, it looked the same as it did this time.

Some good points!
Cummins power booster newsletter had that info a few years back. Keep the rpm between 1800-2000 for the best mileage.

Winter fuel has dropped my mileage as much as 1 1/2 mpg. In the spring, it goes back up!

I did this, too. A friend of mine in Tennessee turned me on to it. Gordon makes a quality product, but I believe the last price I saw was about 80 dollars. You will also have to buy a new IAT, approx 25 dollars at the dealer ( I did not check with Cummins).

Do I need to check the IAT sensor at all the different temperature vs resistances? Or, is one reading fine? Can the IAT be brought up to the different temps by putting it in the oven without wrecking it? Thanks
