Straight Piping My '99

I would like to straight pipe my '99. It has had some exhaust work done to it prior to me owning it. The work was done by a local shop, basically I think a previous owner or son of may have straight piped it, and the guy I bought it from didn't like it. So it now has a muffler and tail section, kind of a hack job, but it just doesn't sound good. There is barely any exhaust sound, pretty much all engine.

I also am uncertain if the muffler that was put on it is for a diesel vehicle. Is there a difference between gas and diesel mufflers, stock type?

So, I would like to just put a 4" turbo back system on it, but I shouldn't spend the money on that right now. So in the interim I would like to just cut out the muffler and splice in a piece of pipe. Or maybe flex pipe? I would like to keep it under $50. I don't think the Geno's eliminator pipe will work as it appears as though from the muffler back was kind of a custom, ha, built system.

Thanks.

if you have a NAPA parts store around you should be able to buy exhaust pipe there. i would stay away from the flew pipe as it is expensive and it will not last.

Thanks cmac.

I found a Midas shop that has a 34" remnant pc of 3" pipe and will flair both ends for me for a total of $15-20. As long as I can get the muffler off w/o have to cut it, it will work. The muffler is clamped so I hope I can twist it to break the crease free.

Any suggestions?

if it is creased it is going to be a pain in the butt. i tried using a heavy duty screw driver and a pry bar but i got impatient and ended up cutting it off.

You can easily straight pipe the 99. I did mine years ago. I did carefull mpg checks and there was absolutely no difference. It just makes a heck of a lot more noise. The 99 is without a doubt the loudest of all Cummins. You can hear mine inside the gas station whenever I get fuel. Pulling the GN up a hill in Duluth, MN rattles the windows a block away. In the winter the 3 cyl idle is scary. dogs bark and bristle, people back away, you can't hear the radio, and my wife won't ride with me. haha

The drone on the highway can get pretty bad too but I cruise at 58-60 so it isn't too bad for me.

Good luck.

Bent's comments are so true. I wake the neighborhood leaving for wk in the am. Even after a new exhaust system, I still can't get it to quiet down. I had a straight pipe originally...noisy. Your time spent may not be worth it as there is really no benefit IMO.

My main concern is that I am unsure about the muffler that is currently on the truck. Whether it is the correct type for a diesel. It isn't a stock muffler, it was put on by a shop by the previous owner. I was thinking that it may not be able to flow the exhaust properly and may cause higher egt's?

I want to put on a 4" TB system, but I can't spend the $$ on that at this time.

Would it be any worse than my previous truck? An '06 with a turbo-back 5" and a flow thru muffler and gutted kitty.

Like comparing apples/oranges in noise difference. I don't think any 2nd gen will be as quiet as a 3rd gen.
You could remove the muffler, hollow it out and reinstall it, instead of buying anything. Hope this helps.

Thanks HB, I guess I will have to get the muffler off clean so if it is too loud I can put it back on.
