Steering wheel radio controls?

What years had this option, and did it automatically come with the premium sound option?

The 99 I just bought has them, though I didn't notice it until nearly 500 miles through the trip! I wasn't expecting them, thought they were an 03+ option only.

My buddy with an 01 has premium sound but doesn't "think" he has the buttons.

The other question is, what does the button on the RIGHT of the wheel do? The button itself is broken off and the white plastic is pushed into the wheel, so I can't try it. I do want to get it fixed though.

Also, do most after market radios work with steering wheel controls?

My 99 had them, yes it was the premium sound option. The system sounded good too!

Ok, but does it automatically come with premium sound or is it an option above that? His is a regular cab with premium sound but no steering wheel controls.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Right buttons are volume.
doubt other radios will work from buttons, even Chrysler radios had to have the option in them.

Actually, any radio with a wired remote can most likely be wired to work with the factory controlls, and some aftermarkets will work by just plugging it in, try calling crutchfield. Also, it was a $500 option for the premium sound package, it included the tweeters in the a pillars, a seperate amp, better speakers, and wheel controlls

I have an 01 with the CD player and the tweeters on the pillars. Is this considered the premium sound? I do not have steering wheel controls. BTW, it is a Sport package truck.

Thanks!

My '01 had the Sport package, tweeters and steering wheeling controls. Doesn't work with the aftermarket deck that the previous owner put in though....

It depended on the radio option. If you opted for the cd cassette combo the steering controls were an extra cost option, $75.00 I believe. If you had just a cd player even with premium sound you could not opt for the steering controls as the radio has no provision for it.

Almost ALL aftermarket stereos will work with the steering wheel controls...

An aftermarket part is needed that costs around 200-250 bucks to make the steering wheel controls work.

Thats the only reason I havent replaced my deck yet... love the wheel controls

The steering wheel radio control buttons were an option code RDZP on my 01.5. Infinity speakers: code RCEP. AM/FM Cassette compact disc Radio code RAZP. I also have the Laramie Plus package but I am not sure that included the steering wheel controls. BTW the owners manual shows the right hand button having a center button like the left hand side but none of the ones I have seen have this. The right hand controls the volume up/down, the left controls the presets and tuning. Kurt
