steering issues discovered

Hey all,

Steering box leakage! it still steers ok, sounds like a dinosaur when cold and the tie rods etc are a bit loosy-goosy.

So with that steering box, there's an upgraded unit, no? Worth the price if the only tire i ever plan on running is a 265/75? I want to do it all at once so as to have it aligned once.

So far we're up to about $7900 on a $6500 truck... Can't say I didn't know what i was getting into though.

A 2001 6 speed 4X4 is worth a hell of a lot more than 6500.00. At least here on the East coast it is.

I thought you meant it was only worth 6500.00.

Nice. I saved the part numbers for those boxes. Does the summitracing unit bolt up to the original steering shaft?

And as far as the front sway bars and steering linkages, what's the preferred replacement for a truck that's going to tow some but won't see much heavy offroading?

You guys are super helpful! Thank you!

Redhead steering boxes have a good rep for the best steering boxes around. When I have to replace mine, I know for certain that is the route I am going to go.

Redhead in Seattle, WA is hte one you want.

They rebuild them in house and you will get what you pay for.

I have read on here countless times that any other box will be junked in a short time....

It is worth mentioning, if you are going to get a new steering box, make sure you also instal a DSS (Darin's Steering Stabilizer) at the same time to protect your new investment!!

DO NOT get an AGR box they are dangerous garbage. Once upon a time they made good stuff, but they went to shell bearings on the sector shaft instead of roller bearings and THEY FAIL sending metal all through your pump and brake booster. Also the sector shaft seal retainer has popped out causing INSTANT steering and brake failure on more than a few folks. Due to using a cheap snap ring on the seal. Also, once the shell bearings fail, you will have multiple random failures of the brakes and steering due to tiny bits of metal hanging up the relief piston in the ps pump. Very difficult to flush them out. NIGHTMARE WITH A CAPITAL N!

You want good steering, get a steering box brace (doesn't matter who from they all do the same thing the same way) and get a modified third gen delphi pump from Genos. Put "T" style steering on, and check your track bar condition.

Personally I would get a borgeson steering shaft rather than grind on the input shaft of the box, too. The stock steering shaft is pretty cheesy. Aluminum sleeves.

www.genosgarage.com carries the 3rd gen delphi box modified to bolt up to the 2nd gen truck. Larger assist piston, lighter "flex shaft" for lighter steering, and a modern design used in current production trucks for future parts availability. Personally I think it's better than a redhead, but I have heard only good things about the redhead boxes.

Oh and just a heads up, "high flow" pumps like AGR and PSC are not a larger pump, but just have the flow port drilled out. There is some variation in the pressure relief spring, but I found when I built the pump on my truck that the parts store pump actually had the heavier spring. Do a search and you will have all sorts of info on this mod pop up. Not an impressive mod unless you need more flow for ram assist.

Ignore the naysayers who swear their stock junk is great. They are fools. I have run full knuckle to knuckle fabricated ram assist "T", stock, and parts list "T". I have run stock box, AGR (junk), and the new Delphi box with and without ram assist. You may find a few people who swear by the stock linkages, but you will NOT find people running T steering who will.
