Starting Issue
My 02 Cummins has been getting harder and harder to start over the last 3 weeks. Both battery's have at least 12.54volts, charging system checked out great.
I have had a code of P1292 that shows up from time to time for the last 4 years. i just clear it and go on with my day. Changed the fuel filter and fuel pump about 500 miles ago and it has ran great tell this issue.
It almost sounds like a battery issue when I go to start it.
Anybody have any ideas?

There are limited possibilities.
If both batteries are good then it's either the wires or the starter.
Isolate and check both batteries. If one of them is bad and you don't isolate them you won't be able to tell. and if only one is good you will have slow starting.
Then check all the grounds. If there isn't a good connection all the way through you will get a voltage drop when you try to draw current.
Lastly, most expensive and most probable the starter is getting dodgey.(pun intended) There are rebuild kits for the solenoid but unless you are really tight on funds just get a good quality rebuilt starter. It will take probably half an hour total to swap out the starter instead of hours to rebuild the solenoid only to find out the windings are going bad.

It has also been mentioned here to KEEP the old starter if origional! They are very robust, much better than what you can buy now. Rebuild it and reuse it.
