Starter Issue

ok so i have a question about the starting system. a couple days ago i went to start the truck and i could hear the solenoid working but the trucjk would not crank. so i tapped the starter gently with a small hammer and it fired up. havent realy had any problems since, but i figure the starter is about to quick on my right???
but needless to say i have been lazy and just have let the truck do its thing and it has nto given me any problems sice. so this got me wondering if it was really the starter. but then today i went to start in on a 42 degree mornign and it acted like i just bumpped the starter when i truened the key. and it did that about three times before actuallt starting.
so could this een the starter like i originally suspected or could it be somthing else.? starter right? any help thanks

How many miles on starter , you should probably get brushes also .

I'll second the starter contacts from Fostertruck. Easy fix once you get the starter out.

Third the contacts from Foster. I bought the kit with the brushes and whatnot before I pulled the starter. Turns out all i needed at the time were the solenoid contacts.
JUST BE SURE TO DISCONNECT BOTH NEGATIVE BATT TERMINALS BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE STARTER

Doubtful he needs brushes yet, as they seem pretty durable. I bought a set myself also, only to find out I was far from needing them yet. I did want to add that stevenl would be much better off replacing the starter contacts, rather than getting a remanufactured unit as the OEM units are well built, whereas the reman units are frequently junk. I will stand behind my statement that you are better off with the kit from Foster truck as many have had numerous issues with remanned starters. Better off doing things right the first time around. Good luck.

You do not know whats going on till you get it apart , & do some inspection & testing / measurements .
Your description does sound like the worst thing in the starter may be the contacts [ very common for these engines ] but the same symptom has been short brushes in many starts of all engines .
Also the short brushes can create more draw going through the contacts , making them have a short life . [ and if the brush's were bigger , more contact on the armature would help ]
As many know from these trucks there are a lot of short cuts [ engineered ] to save money , and that's a lot of what these sites are all about , modding improving .
So the suggestion of having as much as what you may need before you tear down , to avoid finding a ride to get more parts .
Well I'll just put some credentials out there because this is far more than a , I done a couple .
I've been in the auto repair bis for over 30 yrs. [ as employee to my own shop , in a couple of states ] also have been in side many alt. / starter , rebuild shops from small 5-10 workers to huge warehouses building for all the local parts houses , with at least 50 + rolls of labels at the end of the assembly line .
I've rebuilt out in the field with hand tools & a triangular file .
