Question Serious engine problem....

This began as an intermittent problem, but now has become very repeatable. First, fuel pressure is fine, and there are no codes are reported on the odometer, fuel filter is OK.

If the engine is left overnight, or parked all day while I'm at work, when I start it up, it will run very rough and miss, and emits white smoke. The most troubling part is when I put it in gear and drive away, it will accellerate fine, but then seems to drop into sort of a limp mode. The throttle becomes sluggish, and I can't get any serious RPM on the engine. If I shut the engine off and restart, it will drive away fine again, but will drop into this limp mode several times until fully warm. Even then I will occasionally lose power off and on during my 40 mile interstate drive to and from work, but it recovers without shutting the engine off.

At first I thought it was the transmission governor pressure regulator again, but it seems to be shifting up and down fine. Any clues???

Here is the test for the VP$$44:

Put truck in neutral. Mash throttle to floor.

If truck/engine stumbles and emits white or funny colored smoke when you do this the vp44 is junk.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. But no codes? How's does that happen? 128K, not too bad considering all of the problems others have had. Like I said, it was missing badly this morning, and smoking a lot too.

My pump left me stranded. No codes or check engine light. But it was a mechanical failure, not an electronic like most have. I agree with storx, p-pump sounds better and better all the time.

Not necesarrily!!!! I had plenty of throttle in neutral, but throw a load on it, and DEAD PEDAL!!!!! I agree with the others though, sounds like it's time for a new IP.

My first one did the same travelling 75mph down a busy I-270 around Columbus, OH. Rolling right along, and suddenly, truck ain't running!!! Not a fun experience at all!!!!

Well, thanks for the advice. I don't have time to pull it myself, so it's sitting at a dealership presently. I was feeling pretty smug driving around with all of those miles on it. My son's IP went at 60K. So I figured that I had a good one, and it would go on forever. So what kind of damage ($$$) am I looking at? 3 more months and it's mine. Then I think I'm going to sell it. Between the high cost of diesel fuel, big dollar repairs like this, and the expensive option when you buy it, I'm thinking this is my last diesel vehicle.

VP-44 around $1000 aftermarket.
About 4 hours give or take to change it (some can do it much faster because they've done it several times)
Campaign Lift Pump around $70.
Savings in your pocket.......priceless

Heck, if I can do it,.....anyone can.

I seccond Ed's motion that you do it yourself... I have never done one, but have heard a million times that it is a really easy job. Money in your pocket is never a bad thing. Plus I have never heard anying good about the intank pump...

You know, if it were July I would probably try it myself. But it's 38 degrees up here right now, and I have no place to move inside. Add to the mix that we're traveling over Thanksgiving, and it's coming at a really bad time. Also considering working a deal on a new vehicle.... Don't know.....
