Seal Kit on Vacuum pump and still leaking...
First off being my first post I need to state what a resource this board is for a Dodge owner. Have been looking around and using the board for while, now have an issue I need help with.
I completed the Vacuum pump seal kit install yesterday, and I still have a leak. It might actually be my fault... The seal for between the Vacuum and Power Steering Pump, when I installed it I place the seal front (side with firm area) facing the engine, facing away from the power steering pump. This made since to me since using a socket to press the seal, thought it would be best to have the firmer surface. Can anyone remember from their install if this is correct?

the lips of a seal always face towards the oil source, so looking at the pump as it is installed on the engine the seal lips should face towards the injection pump timing cover (or towards the engine fan)
yep you did install it backwards! did you pull it as an assy or one piece at a time?

Had a feeling it could have been wrong. I pulled it as a unit. Think I would be OK pulling it and reusing the seal? Nearest Cummins dealer is about 80 miles away and would not be able to get up to until late next week. However I am also thinging I not be cheap and insure it is done right only $8 and the leak is not that bad...

Just pulled the pump apart again. Amazing how much faster the process is the second time.
Removing the air intake is a huge help, found that on the board this morning while searching for my issue. The seal was most difinately backward and if I would have thought about it the first time should have realized it.
I guess the third time should be the charm, seal had a slight wrinkle in it from pushing the power steering pump thought it. Johnh, thanks for the offer of the seal, think I am going to go call down to Colorado Kenworth like fschiola suggested, would think if they do not have it can get it in a few day.
Sixb, the VP kits was $8.50 at Rocky Mountain Cummins. You can also rebuild the PS for something like $16 from Parts America.

1. Remove four nuts securing Power Steering Pump (PSP) to Vacuum Pump (VP). Studs may back out of PSP. Just thread back in. Leave all PSP hoses connected. There is a spring aft of PSP on the injection pump that can get in the way. Disconnect and let hang. Do not separate PSP from VP yet.
2. Remove VP supply line and oil line at the bottom of VP. You may need to back up the fitting (7/16) at the bottom of the VP and then remove the oil line (9/16). You will get some oil drainage so be ready with a small pan.
3. Remove lower bolt attaching VP to gear case. Loosen but do not remove upper bolt completely as this will allow the whole assembly to hang down at an angle providing more room to separate the assy.
4. Gently separate PSP from VP taking care not to scar the sealing surface becoming visable attached to the PSP. Rest PSP on engine mount.
5. Remove upper bolt on VP and remove from vehicle.
6. Keep things clean. Remove two bolts and separate VP halves.
7. Set the PSP side (four legs) of VP face down on bench. Fit a deep socket (large as possible) through the hole in the center and drive the center section holding the seal from the outer housing.
8. Remove old seal and press in new. Clean all o-rings and lightly lube with grease including inside diameter of new seal and sealing surface on PSP.
9. Install center drive star and seal center section into housing. Assemble both havles of VP making sure there is no dirt inside the VP.
10. Install components in opposite order of removal. Clock drive fingers on PSP to VP to help in mating PSP to VP.
Was told by local Cummins dealer that no parts were available for the vacuum pump on my 98.5. Seems that they are wrong, does anyone have the part #. The price seems better than the $59.95 kit I've seen. Thanks, Kenny
