Quits at half tank !
Quits at half tank !
Ok, first of all I love this site . Lots of useful information , when I had my first generation diesel I could always find the answers to my problems.
Sadly I sold the truck and recently purchased a 01 ext cab 6sp manual.
The truck needed a IP when I got it . I got the IP and decided to put a new lift pump in the tank as well. Cleaned the tank when it was off and put new fuel filter on also. Truck ran great , until it was reading just over a half tank of fuel left... Then it quit. Put more fuel in it and it took off again. Talked to dealer, did some tests on lift pump, seemed to be sucking a bit of air when it was in a bucket hooked to 12 volts. Dealer exchanged for another brand new lift pump. I installed this.. Then decided to fuel up then truck and go for a test run. Truck got to the same fuel level (just over half ) and quit. I put 5 gallons of fuel in it, and it started again . *** ! I'm new to second generation trucks... But I read that sometimes the vent on the fuel cap can be an issue. So today I picked up a new fuel cap and I will see if the same issue will happen again once it goes to the half tank fuel level. Just wondering if anyone has had similar problems ??? Or any suggestions ?

Possibly a bad connection on the intank pump...or a bad fuel sender. How much to fill back up? A longbed should take 36 gallons if empty.
I'd lose the in tank garbage pump asap and get a FASS or other quality outside mounted lift pump..
Sounds to me like you may be getting air in the fuel line and then it is repriming to get you going again. Does it flat die or kind of rumble to a stop?

Kind of rumbles to a stop .. Especially when stopping ..
Makes sense the fuel isn't getting sucked up and pushed ..
It's the second brand new lift pump doing great over half a tank . I've proven that the gauge is reading the proper amount of fuel . This is really throwing me for a loop . The truck should start and run with 5 gallons of fuel . It shouldn't need 15 .. Argh !!!

There have been cases of a screw or fitting inside the tank module rubbing a hole into the pickup hose over time, causing this very problem.
There are also many cases (my truck included) where the tank float sensor has died, giving false readings. In my case, my gauge read ¼ tank when the engine died, the tank was dry.
In either case, you'll have to access the tank module to inspect and repair as necessary.

If not, you may enjoy reading how I fixed very similar issue in mine. Kinda lengthy, but I try to spell out 'xactly what I did (later posts contain my actions/results). -D
