Power steering pump?

Last week I went to Children’s Hospital in Denver, I was on the fifth floor of the parking garage. The spots are too small for a longbed, [dummy] anyhow. When we were leaving I had to jockey around several times to get out. I was on my last hitch when I lost power steering and brakes. There was no noise or anything, they just quit. Now if that isn't fun trying to come down out of a parking garage with no brakes or PS! [eyecrazy] As soon as I got out of the garage, I checked the lines and they are warm, so it must be circulating some fluid. The PS pump always made a growling when it was cold outside. I need to pull it off and check the vacuum pump to make sure it didn't break the coupler. I just haven't had time. I guess my question is what does a power steering pump do when it goes out???? If the drive coupler is good, is the PS pump the only other thing that would cause this or would the hydra boost or anything else cause this?

Thanks everyone,
Jeromy

I had a similar problem with my truck.

I had changed fluid, jacked up the truck must not have gotten one tire all the way off the ground, started the truck and had no brakes or Powersteering.

To make a long story short it eneded up being the coupler on the vacuum pump $700.00 and a week later [verymad] I was back on the road with no problems.

If you have never done this before you have to split the vacuum pump to inspect the coupler, mine had a hairline crack down one side and was spinning on the pump shaft.

If you need a vacuum pump or coupler try www.fixinrams.com. they have all the parts you need or reman pumps if that is what you want to do.

O and the Hydro boost and power steering both run off the power steering pump.

Sorry it took so long to get back to this I've been strongarming the dodge so long I look like Popeye! Anyhow, it is fixed, it was the shaft on the powersteering pump, so it was only about $120 with core.
Thanks,
J
