2001 CTD
95000 miles
$0 cost, under warrenty
LP & IP was going out when we first looked at the truck was fixed before we took home
Southern California, Mid Summer (june 2005)

There were no gauges so we figure the last owner didn't realize IP was going out until engine light went on and took it in to trade. When we saw the light husband test drove and knew right away what it was. Dealer didn't give us any trouble with replacing both.

I'm amazed to the amount of issues with these LP/IP's. I cant believe DC hasnt had to recall.

Recalls are usually only for safety related items/failures.....

My history :

I have owned my 98.5 for 1 year and it has 330,000 km (204,600 miles)....

to date, no VP44 issues including running with the tapped Comp - have no idea when the VP may have been replaced prior to me owning the truck- the original owner said it had never been replaced but I really don't have any reason to believe him.

The LP appeared as if it had been on the truck a very long time when I bought it and continues to perform well with the help of the Smartfuel kit......I have a new one waiting when this one bites the dust, but it just won't die!

112829 02/24/2004 Replaced IP -- direct result of failed LP

My '00 was bought used (113k miles)
114950 03/05/2005 Replaced LP with AirDog -- pump OK... didn't want to take any chances!!!!!

Perhaps it could be viewed as a safety issue but either way, the NTSB and DC clearly don't agree with you......

this is the ONE thing stopping me from buying a truck, the stupid pumps...........so the problems start with the LP. What makes it go out? Is it just POS?

I know I'll catch it for this but I'm leaning gas Chevy/Dodge because of the stupid pump issues.

98.5 2500 95000 miles
My vp 44 went out two months ago with no sign of trouble just missed bad and quit then no restart. ( Had 6psi at full throttle with lift pump)
I sent my core off to Blue Chip Diesel Preformance today . They have a updated pump for $1600 after trying to bid on a used pump twice on e-bay I gave up and went with Blue Chip pump. I am surprised there is not a class action or something law suit against Bosch over there Crap pumps a real slam to cummins. Dont get me wrong I love my truck but I think Cummins could have done a lot better. Ok Ill stop now it just gets me on a roll over this . Good post hope to here more war stories. Larry

If you have a fuel pressure guage you'll know when the LP starts having problems. I have replaced 2 LP's and I have the same IP for 180K miles. If you take care of these trucks and monitor their systems they will do fine. If you get in and drive it like a yuppie truck you might have problems. The VAST majority of CTD owners have no problems at all. If you can change an oil filter you can maintain a CTD.

Buy what ever you want to buy. I'm not brand loyal, I just know a good truck, tranny, and motor and I bought it off the show room floor.

SInce the vp44 is screwed up from the LP failing, what causes the LP to fail in the first place?

the truck i'm looking at is on its 2nd LP and has 50k miles on the truck.............don't know how long it went around on the faulty pump before be'n replaced, meaning i don't know the condition of the vp44?????????

Some people have had good luck repositioning them to the frame and making them a pusher pump. I personally feel it is heat. But that is JMO.

80,000 miles
original VP
1st LP replaced at 74,000 due to low but steady pressure.
2nd LP is on the frame.
