pan gasket change
If you're asking about the engine oil pan gasket....
The service manual calls for the transmission and transfer case to come down. It has been widely mentioned that this can be avoided by releasing the engine mounts and jacking the engine up, but I have never done so.
Without doing either of the above I believe you would be able to drop the pan far enough to slip the gasket on and off if the pickup tube weren't there.

Yes it can , we do it everytime we do a gear housing , raise the engine without tearing the fan shroud , also you drop the pan and remove the oil pick up tube and set it in the pan , it will come out , and back in the same order. it is difficult but doable.
reading the original question again , you do have to raise the engine by removing the engine mount bolts. but you dont have to remove the trans.
