Overfilled Oil

Gentlemen,
I changed my oil last night and noticed that the previous oil change, I overfilled my crankcase by one quart. :o I use Shell Rotella oil, which comes in four quart bottles (I buy three bottles). Meaning that during the oil change I filled my oil filter with oil, then used the remainder to fill my crankcase. Which overfilled my crankcase by one quart. :-[ Yikes!!! Do you think I did any damage? I sure don't want to hurt my baby. :'( Help!!! [undecided]

Re:Overfilled Oil

I wouldn't worry about it. It's not like you filled it to the top of the valve cover ;D

Seriously though, IMHO there's so much splashing and surging in any engine when driving, I can't imagine one quart over (that's only about eight percent) would cause any damage. I would think that you may get some excess oil in the vent bottle up front. Did you check that?
Sure did. No oil in the vent bottle. I check that every oil change. So far so good. 8)

[quote author=emjay link=board=4;threadid=17233;start=0#161356 date=1058538056]
I wouldn't worry about it. Re:Overfilled Oil

IMHO the fact there is no excess oil coming from the vent should indicate that there is no problem. Had you overfilled it drasticaly there could have been a chance of foaming (crank hitting oil etc) and sundry other problems that may have surfaced.
Bottom line; Do not worry. Forget it.

Re:Overfilled Oil

When the 24v first came out, some of them ( mine included ) had a dipstick that was too short. This caused the crankcase to be overfilled by about 1 quart. DC said the only consequence was possible spillage in extremely rough terrain, like 4 wheeling. I`d forget it & drive on.

Been putting three gallons in mine at oil changes since new, never had a problem.
