Opinions needed, fuel economy 4x4 vs 2wd

I may trade my 98 24v for a 99 24v that is a 4 wheel drive. Two or three times a year I need 4 wheel drive. My question is: what would be the difference in fuel economy between the two?? My 2wd does have a fuel economy chip, and get's about 20 mpg on the freeway if I keep it at 68 mph. If I go faster it goes down a lot,..If I can stand doing 55 mph I get over 22 mpg. In town fuel economy varies widely. This 4x4 is a standard tranny, mine is an auto, And I understand that a standard tranny will get better economy in city driving but not on the highway. Anyway, my 98 24v is a wonderful truck,.. And I am worried I might get a not so wonderful truck with not so wonderful fuel economy. Anybody have any input, please chime in. My truck, as well as the 4x4 I want to get, both have about 275K miles on them, And both have current VP44s. I'll probably have to pay about $1k or more difference in order to make the trade. I'm not worried so much about making up the difference in price,..as I am about not knowing how well it was maintained. All I can think is to check that's it's not a 53 block and that it's not hotrodded. I see no point in owning a truck if someone thought it needed more horsepower.

Seems that mileage varies by person and by truck. I can say that my 2001 4x4 auto, they way I drove it I did get 20 mpg at 65-70mph on the highway and 19 at 75-80mph, my max mpg was 23.4 however that was driving 45-55mph over a couple hundred miles in great weather. In mixed driving it was high 18's to low 19's. With tanks of fuel that were all city which were few and far between it was low to mid 18's. Winter fuel here did affect it by abut 5%. This was all hand calc'd not the lie-o-meter as it was way off on my truck. My truck weighed approx 7300lbs, had rv275 injectors, smarty and edge juice with attitude, Denver off road front bumper and a headache rack neither of which helped the aerodynamics, and 285/16 tires (had speedo corrected, but was same with the stock 265 tires) Removing juice with attitude, the smarty or both did not have any discernible effect on my mileage. I wish my 17 got the same mileage but I am very lucky to hit 20 at anytime same routes that would get me 20 are now 18-19, city driving is a much bigger hit on the 17 can go as low as mid 15's to high 16's.

City driving I'm never even close to freeway mpg. I'm guessing about 15 mpg for city but that's just a guess.
