NV5600 what is the right oil?
 

I have a 2002 3500 with 6 speed. What is the correct oil for NV5600.

The factory recommended lube is a 5W-30 synthetic gear lube:
Mopar #4761526
Texeco code 1874 MTX (my local distributor said he couldn't sell it to me, the Dodge & GM dealers had the exclusive contract to this oil and the local Dodge dealer gets $16/qt and it takes 9 1/2 pints.)

I put Amsoil synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmision Fluid 5W-30, around $8/qt., in mine Aug.'07 and it shifts better...time will tell if this was a good decision.

Been running the Amsoil for about 100K miles with no problems at all.

Thanks a lot. I had a overdrive box put in and I don't think the right oil was put in. It shifts bad when it is cold.

When I installed the 6 speed in my truck, I installed the same oil that was used in the 5 speed. It shifted terrible, especially when cold. I used 5w30 synthetic engine oil until Amsoil came out with theirs. It shifts much better with the thinner oil.

The 6 speed doesn't like cold temps. Put an extra quart in it when you refill it. It helps get lube to everything and seems to shift a little easier. I run Redline MTL in mine. The feeling around these pages seems to be that the Amsoil is a little superior and preferred by more who have tried other lubes. Kurt

I could only get Redline and it seems to have fixed the cold shift problem.

Watch out guys to choose the RIGHT oil, don't skimp on prices !!! I have a NV4500 on my truck that PO change oil to, well, you will not believe the noises I heard last week. Today I am going out to buy a rebuilt transmission.

Then I will go to the local dealer and use the Syntorq or whatever oil they use, be sure it's the right one, pay the absurd price for it, and be sure nothing will happen to it for the next 100 years ;)

What I am trying to say is not to go cheap on oil, even at $ 16/quart it is cheaper then a rebuild..... a NV5600 is $ 2500 !!!!!!! :o

I've heard good things about the amsoil, redline, pennzoil (not synthetic), and even the factory stuff. I've heard that if you do a lot of heavy hauling, the amsoil doesn't seem to last as long. I'm using the royalpurple stuff and didn't like the way mine shifts with it, but I was under my dash the other day and noticed that my clutch master cyl. is really starting to leak, so maybe thats the cause of the overly notchy shifting.

Dug this up. So, if I were to goto my local autozone, and pick up 10 quarts of synthetic 30W gear lube, I should be OK? Royal purple is available here. I just need to do some mailtaince, I bet its never been changed, or at least not in a very long time!

You only need 6 quarts for the NV5600 to be overfilled by about a quart. Make sure you don't confuse pints with quarts or liters etc. The easiest way to get the fluid in is thru the top cover if you are going to overfill. KM

Yes, they dont like the cold much. I switced to Redline MTL because everyone raved about it - but my experience seems to be opposite to what everyone else claims. I parked the truck sideways on a steep hill and overfilled it by a quart.

Im not sure if its related or not, but after its gotten cold...I have a slight grind in 3rd gear (usually just the 1 st and second shifts of the day)/ The grind goes away after that. Very strange - and Im not real happy about it.

Cool, I found a Redline dealer next to me(cheap too!!!), in the Nascar race park, go figure! I'll get 6 qts and change it out today, might as well do the rear end too, looks like 4 qts will do for that. I will be pulling 12-15k up and down hills, figured I'd put redline in the rear too. Should I just use the 80/90?

Auto Zone also sells Pennzoil Syncromesh and that runs about $7 a quart.
It is rated for the NV trannies.
