NV5600-Texaco STF 1874
NV5600-Texaco STF 1874
This is the lube recommeded on the tranny, besides the Chrysler corresponding number. I called a Texaco Distributor in Houston. H eindiacted that this product is not available to the public, only as an OEM lube to Chysler & GM.
I suspect anyone else who has looked for this, has had the same experienece.
If not, please let me know a source.
What does Dodge get per quart for this?

I'm using 3qts Valvoline 5w-15(?) syn motor oil and 2qts 75w-90 syn gear oil - so far, no problems, but I haven't towed with the blend - no problems in winter, either, no increased effort from cold-start - did that to get around Dodge's 24bucks a quart for the 'right stuff'
Pennzoil makes an equivalent lube that you can find at your local parts store. It is called SYNCHROMESH, and they state that it meets Meets GM Specification 9985648 and Chrylser Specification MS-9224, and protects "yellow metals" (those would be your synchronizers). One of my buddies used this in his NV5600, and has had no problems. We overfilled by a quart, too. MTL is a great choice, and would be mine.

I checked Penzsoil's web site and indeed the Synromesh is a spot on repacement targeted at the greed & lust of Chrysler & GM. We should be able to use it without issue, I doubt they can tell the diff.
I have extended warranty, so to anyone wanting to keep their warranty, it is an issue.

I checked on it as well, the texaco stuff is on contract to the Dodge & GM dealers, the distributors can't sell it to anyone else or tell you the price. One of the dealers here charges $15.68/qt.
I changed mine to the Amsoil MTF today and it shifts much smoother than before, time will tell.

This is a HD tranny. They put this spec in place for a reason. If you put anything in other than the spec or better, the chances of doing more harm than good are excellent.
Do you know what the Lottery is? It is a tax on the mathematically impaired.
When you bet on a lube that does not meet the spec you play the lottery. Especially with a warranty.
For what it is worth.

I'd bet on redline every day of the week and twice on sunday.
If you do homework to discover the meaning behind the spec, the you can get around the spec. For example, the MS-9224 spec is for viscosity, shear stability, and yellow metal compatibility.
So if I find a lube that meets those requirements, is in the same viscosity range, and so forth, I'd try it for sure.
I've tried Pennzoil synchromesh, MTL, OEM lube, and Royal Purple's lube.
Best by far for shift quality is MTL. Followed by OEM, then Pennzoil, then the RP. The RP was terrible. I had to change it out at only a few thousand miles because the truck was almost undriveable with it in.
I want to try the Torco or Amsoil products-- I think they'd be good options.

The Amsoil sheet says their MTF trans lube meets Chrysler MS-9224 specs...the same spec on the texaco 1874 MTX Fluid sheet.
Amsoil also meets Chrysler MS-9417 spec, which I didn't see on the texaco sheet.
It's got 102,000 miles and is already shifting better....
