No lift pump
 

I recently bought a 2000 dodge ram 2500 turbo diesel 24v 5.9L. Its been running fine and for the previous owner whom i know. I recently changed the drain valve on the water/fuel separator because it was consistently dripping. I primed the system and got her running again, i let it run for a while and it shutoff again like it needs primed again. I noticed then that there is no Lift Pump, theres the hose coming from the fuel tank that is connected to what looks like the housing for the lift pump but no lift pump. Now it looks like theres a fuel pump in the fuel tank does that mean i wouldnt need a lift pump then. I need help please

Sounds like it was converted to an in tank pump. If it is not working, it will need to be replaced.

Sounds like the truck has the warranty retrofitted in-tank lift pump which was done at the dealer. In doing that they remove the engine mounted lift pump but the fuel line hose still pass right by that location.

You need to find a fuel pressure test gauge. Possibly rent one from a parts store if you need to. There's ones you can purchase from forum vendors for about $50 if you so choose later on.

But what you're looking for is pressure indicating that the in-tank pump is actually working and what the pressures are during idle and while driving. Those are important to know. :thumbsup:

Thank yall for the feed back. Makes more sense now im just learning about diesels. Its defiently in the tank and i can see what you mean how the lines will pass thru the old location. Ive been reading and it sounds like i should defiently invest in a fuel pressure gauge. Thanks yall

Absolutely..... Gauges are not simply for looks as so many people get them for that reason, but rather they play very important roles in letting you know whats going on all the time. Their help in diagnostics is worth their costs. So dont get the cheap garbage gauges which are unreliable. No point in having gauges if you cant trust what they're telling you. :thumbsup:

Yes, likely you have either air in the lines which is hard to purge out with weak fuel pumps, and/or leaking fuel line fittings. Or the lift pump isnt doing anything and the VP is trying to suck its own fuel. Thats BAD. Get a fuel pressure test gauge on there ASAP so you know whats going on. Rent one, buy one, whatever..... Dont damage the VP for sake of impatience.

gauges sounds alot better. Im going to not start this till i go grab some gauges first. Ill keep ya posted on what they say. Thank ya sir
