New member I have a few questions

Howdy Folks,

This is my first post on this forum and I don't own a Dodge Cummins.

When I bought my 1996 Ford 4x4 Powerstroke I had a choice between that and a 1995 Dodge 2WD Cummins.

I ended up choosing the Powerstoke because it had 4WD for the the same price as the 2WD Dodge.

After owning my truck for a few months I have had a few frustrations and I'm wondering if I made the right decision.

I have two questions for you fellows.

1) Is it possible to remove heads and oil pan from a Dodge Cummins truck of this year and model without removing the engine?

2) What are you guys getting on gas mileage in your Dodge Cummins trucks?

Thanks for your replies,
Ian Mechura

Ian, you don't want to go with the g mileage question, believe me. Edit your post while you still can, and good luck. ;)

1). Not 100% sure, cuz I've never done it, but I think that you can.

2). If you want to read hrs of threads, then do a search on fuel milage or mpg, somewhere in that ball park. As for me, I get city around 14, 16-17 on the highway. My mods don't help my mpg. Ehhh, what ya gonna do, right?

on a dodge you can remove the pan and head in frame , i know this from exp. You might have to lift the eng. a little to clear stuff.
This even works for 4wd.
The exception to this is studs- if studs are in place of bolts I donot think you can get the head off in frame

I average 17 in the city or pulling a trailer (nothing too heavy mind you) and 20 -21 on the highway. :)

Thanks for the replies guys.

I am sitting here truckless while my powerstroke sits in the shop waiting for the inner dipstick tube to be fished out of the oil pan.

I tried to get it out for days before I gave up and sent it to the mechanic.

My mileage is a little less than yours with my current mods. About 17-18 on the highway with no load on a 4x4 with 4:10 rear diff ratio. That's if I keep it right at 2200 rpms.

I think I must just be frustrated about bad design leading to days in the shop with still litttle hope that I will be back on the road anytime soon.

Thanks again fellows,
Ian Mechura

I believe rear diff. ratio has A LOT to do with fuel milage. I have the same (4:1) rear end and get the same mileage you mentioned and I try and have a lite foot. The big three all have there own problems, fix it-run it and enjoy!

FYI, Head can be removed and reinstalled in frame with studs! At least you can on mine - Haisley 12 mm Studs. There is JUST enough room!
17-18 MPG just about everywhere - don't know why it won't go up at 75 mph?

yeah the rear has alot to do with it. With our identical trucks I get 16mpg w/4.10 and my dad gets 23mpg w/3.55
